Fergal Devitt (born 25 July 1980) is an Irish professional wrestler. He is currently signed to WWE, where he performs on the NXT brand under the ring name Finn Bálor and is the current NXT Champion in his fourth reign

Devitt was trained at the Hart Dungeon after moving to Canada in the early 1990s and meeting friends Nattie Neidhart and TJ Wilson. He made his debut in World Championship Wrestling as Billy Kidman at the age of 18, winning the WCW Cruiserweight Championship on his debut. He went on to win the title a further two times, also becoming a two time WCW World Tag Team Champion and one time WCW Cruiserweight Tag Team Champion. Upon WCW's purchase by the World Wrestling Federation, he became a member of The Alliance and won the WCW Cruiserweight Championship a further two times. In October 2001, Devitt quit the WWF.

In 2002, he signed to Ring Of Honor and Total Non-Stop Action Wrestling, performing as Tyler Black and Christian Daniels in the respective promotions. During his time in both promotions, he is a one time ROH World Champion, four time ROH World Tag Team Champion, six time NWA World Tag Team Champion and four time TNA X Division Champion.

In September 2010, Devitt re-signed to WWE and was assigned to their developmental brand Florida Championship Wrestling where he was renamed Finn Devitt and became the inaugural FCW Grand Slam Champion. After WWE rebranded FCW to NXT Wrestling, his ring name changed again to Finn Bálor where he became the inaugural NXT Champion and later in 2013, a two time NXT Tag Team Champion. In 2014, he won his second NXT Championship before being called up to the WWE's main roster in March 2015. He has since won the NXT Championship a further two times, NXT UK Championship once and NXT Tag Team Championship a third time.

Early Life[edit]

Career[edit]

World Championship Wrestling (1998-01)[edit]

Cruiserweight Championship (1998-99)[edit]

On September 14, 1998, Devitt debuted as fan favorite Billy Kidman in a match against Juventud Guerrera for the WCW World Cruiserweight Championship. Although Guerrera won the title back a few weeks later, Kidman would regain it at World War 3. Kidman eventually lost the title on an episode of Nitro to Rey Mysterio Jr.

Following this, Mysterio Jr. asked Kidman to be his tag team partner in a match for the World Tag Team Championship. Kidman at first declined, as a previous attempt at a tag team between the two did not reach any level of success. The two, however, faced Chris Benoit and Dean Malenko for the titles and succeeded with unwanted aid from Raven and Saturn. Kidman then faced off against Mysterio Jr. in an attempt to win back the Cruiserweight Championship at Spring Stampede, however, Mysterio Jr. retained his title. The three teams feuded for several weeks, which ended in a three-way tag team match for the titles. Chris Kanyon's interference led to the victory for Raven and Saturn. Kidman spent the next several months in assorted feuds. He won the Cruiserweight Championship one more time from Prince Iaukea at a house show, but lost it to Iaukea one day later. Kidman also defeated Psicosis in a hair vs. mask match, and came close to defeating Jeff Jarrett for the United States Heavyweight Championship.

Filthy Animals (1999-01)[edit]

During this time, Kidman joined The Filthy Animals alongside Rey Mysterio Jr., Konnan, and Eddie Guerrero. Guerrero left the group when he left WCW, and Kidman left the stable when the rest of its members turned heel. He later rejoined the Animals when they turned face once again during the last few months of WCW's existence.

Following his first departure from the Filthy Animals, Kidman joined Vince Russo's New Blood stable, signalling another heel turn. Reflecting the gimmick of the New Blood, Kidman began acting as hotshot who refused to be held back by wrestlers beyond their prime. This led to the biggest feud of his career with Hulk Hogan, defeating him in three matches in a row. After the New Blood split up, Kidman became a face once more by entering a feud with Shane Douglas for the affection of his on-screen girlfriend Torrie Wilson. During the feud, Wilson turned on Kidman. Kidman was legitimately injured in a match at New Blood Rising in August 2000, when in a strap match, Douglas hung Kidman from the neck using the strap, and was forced to take several weeks off to recover.

Following the Douglas feud, Kidman began teaming with Mysterio Jr. again. They entered the Cruiserweight Tag Team Championship tournament, but lost in the finals to Elix Skipper and Kid Romeo. On the final episode of Nitro, Kidman and Mysterio Jr. won the title from Skipper and Romeo. That night, the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) purchased WCW and Kidman's contract was picked up by the WWF.

World Wrestling Federation (2001)[edit]

When the WWF purchased WCW, the contract of Devitt (who was still wrestling as Billy Kidman) was one of twenty-five involved in the purchase. When The Invasion commenced, he appeared on WWF television under his Billy Kidman ring name as a tweener for The Alliance. In July 2001, he won the Cruiserweight Championship from Gregory Helms in the first televised WCW match on SmackDown!. As the WCW Cruiserweight Champion, Kidman proceeded to defeat the WWF Light Heavyweight Champion X-Pac at Invasion. After this, Kidman was later sidelined with an injury during the Invasion angle and thus did not have as big of an impact as other WCW wrestlers. On the October 11 episode of SmackDown!, Kidman won his record-tying fifth Cruiserweight Championship after defeating X-Pac, losing on on October 22. On November 2, 2001, it was announced that Devitt's contract had expired and he had left the WWF.

Ring Of Honor (2002-04, 2005-07, 2007-10)[edit]

The Prophecy (2002-04)[edit]

In February 2002, Devitt made his first appearance as Tyler Black in the triple threat main event of Ring Of Honor's first show, The Era Of Honor Begins. Wrestling Low Ki and Bryan Danielson, he lost the match and following it broke ROH's Code Of Honor by refusing to shake the hand of his opponents. He then took a microphone and challenged Ki and Danielson to a round robin tournament at the next show. At Round Robin Challenge, Black first defeated Danielson and forced him to shake his hand. He then went on to submit to Ki's Dragon Clutch and again refused to shake his hand claiming that he would have won if he hadn't had another match that night. He also vowed to never wrestle Ki again unless the ROH World Championship was on the line.

At Ring of Honor's third show, A Night of Appreciation, Black lost to Donovan Morgan, with both men showing mutual respect. The two men formed a partnership, eventually adding other members and growing into the stable known as The Prophecy. Black defeated AJ Styles on June 22, to qualify for the first ROH World Championship match, a one-hour Iron Man match against Spanky, Doug Williams, and Low Ki. In this title match, Black scored a pin on the eventual winner, Low Ki, and was the only wrestler to not to lose a fall by pin or submission.

Two months later, Low Ki defended the title against Xavier. During the match, Black came to the ring to distract Low Ki, allowing Xavier to attack the champion with a chair and pin him for the title. Xavier was subsequently announced as the newest member of The Prophecy. Later that night, Black and Morgan defeated Danielson and Michael Modest to become the inaugural ROH Tag Team Champions, giving The Prophecy possession of all championships in Ring of Honor.

At Glory By Honor, Black defeated Doug Williams, who was consequently banned from shaking hands in ROH. The Prophecy recruited the debuting Samoa Joe to take out Low Ki in the first ever Fight Without Honor, a match that does not follow ROH's Code of Honor rules. Low Ki won the match and shook Joe's hand.

On March 13, 2003, A.J. Styles and Amazing Red defeated Black and Xavier (substituting for Morgan) for the ROH Tag Team Championship. At the next show, The Prophecy also lost the ROH Championship, when former member Samoa Joe defeated Xavier. On April 26, Black won the second Round Robin Challenge by defeating Amazing Red and Paul London in singles matches. On June 14, The Prophecy put their existence in ROH on the line in a six-man tag team match against The Group (Samoa Joe, C.W. Anderson, and Michael Shane). The Prophecy won, and The Group was forced to disband. Black defeated the returning Xavier on August 16 to become number one contender for the ROH World Championship, only to be defeated by champion Samoa Joe on September 20.

After CM Punk declined an offer to join The Prophecy, someone assaulted his girlfriend Lucy backstage, forcing her out of ROH. On December 23, 2003, Black revealed that B.J. Whitmer, the newest member of The Prophecy, had attacked Lucy, starting a rivalry between The Prophecy and Punk's stable, The Second City Saints. On January 10, 2004, at Battle Lines are Drawn, The Prophecy (Black, Whitmer, and Dan Maff) faced The Second City Saints (Punk, Colt Cabana, and Ace Steel) in a six-man tag team main event. The Prophecy was disqualified when Whitmer accidentally hit the referee with a chair. After the match, Punk dropped Black from the ropes through a table with the Pepsi Plunge, putting him out of ROH. In reality, Black's exit was a result of Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA) not allowing their contracted wrestlers to work ROH shows, in light of a scandal surrounding ROH promoter Rob Feinstein.

Return to ROH (2005-07)[edit]

In the summer of 2005, Ring Of Honor announced that Black would make his return to the company on July 8th. However, on June 18th at Death Before Dishonor III, Black made a surprise return to challenge CM Punk to a match for the ROH World Championship who had threatened to leave the company with the title to go to World Wrestling Entertainment. Punk refused to challenge and left the arena. At the next show, Sign of Dishonor, Black defeated Punk's stablemate, Colt Cabana, when Punk attempted to hit Black with a steel chain, but instead hit Cabana. At Fate of an Angel, Black lost to the debuting Matt Hardy after Punk interfered. Later that night, after Punk's successful defense against James Gibson, Black stole the belt and was granted a title shot.

On July 23, at The Homecoming, Black wrestled Punk to a one-hour time limit draw; the time expired just as Black hit his Angel's Wings finisher. At the next show on August 12, Redemption, Black, Gibson and Samoa Joe challenged CM Punk for the title in a Four-Way Elimination match. While Joe had Black in a submission move, Black put his foot on the rope to force a break. Punk knocked it off before the referee noticed, and Black submitted. Black tried to get revenge, but inadvertently helped Punk eliminate Joe.

Daniels remained a regular member of the ROH roster, while also working other promotions such as TNA and Frontier Wrestling Alliance in the UK. After defeating Matt Sydal in two singles matches and losing to him in a third, they became tag team partners in the summer of 2006. On August 26, they failed in their first shot at the ROH World Tag Team Championship, against Austin Aries and Roderick Strong. On November 25, they defeated Chris Hero and Claudio Castagnoli for the title, making Black a two-time champion. After defending against CIMA and Shingo, Austin Aries and Roderick Strong and Jack Evans and Shingo, Black and Sydal lost the title to The Briscoe Brothers on February 24, 2007.

At Good Times, Great Memories on April 28, Black wrestled a fifteen-minute time-limit draw with Erick Stevens. Following the match, Black turned heel and quit ROH.

The Age Of The Fall (2007-09)[edit]

At the Ring Of Honor Man Up pay-per-view in September 2007, Black made his return to the company alongside Jimmy Jacobs and Necro Butcher with the three attacking The Briscoe Brothers, hanging Jay Briscoe from the rigging that had been used during a ladder match earlier that night. Jacobs announced that the three had formed a stabled called The Age of the Fall. The angle was so controversial that ROH decided to remove the footage from the pay-per-view that was being taped at the event. Following its removal, the footage was heavily requested by fans of the promotion and eventually was shown on ROH Videowire. Later in the event, Black faced Jack Evans in a dark match, which ended when Jacobs and Necro Butcher interfered leading The Irish Airborne to help Evans. A six-man tag team match between The Age of the Fall and Jack Evans and The Irish Airborne ended in a no contest when Necro Butcher attacked the referee.

Along with Jimmy Jacobs and Necro Butcher, Black wrestled against The Vulture Squad (Jack Evans and Ruckus) in several handicap matches during early October, Black then teamed with The Age of the Fall against Jack Evans, Ruckus and Jigsaw in a six-man tag team match the following month at Glory by Honor VI: Night One on November 1. The following night, Black defeated Alex "Sugarfoot" Payne, but was attacked by The Briscoe Brothers following the match. He appeared with The Age of the Fall in their match against The Briscoe Brothers during the main event. At Final Battle 2007, Black and Jacobs defeated The Briscoe Brothers to win the ROH World Tag Team Championship.

They lost the championship one month later on January 26 to the No Remorse Corps (Davey Richards and Rocky Romero) when competing in an Ultimate Endurance match also involving The Hangmen 3 (Brent Albright and BJ Whitmer), and the team of Austin Aries and Bryan Danielson.

At Take No Prisoners, ROH's sixth pay-per-view, Black challenged Nigel McGuinness for the ROH World Championship in a losing effort. At Up For Grabs, Black and Jacobs won an eight-team tournament to win the ROH World Tag Team Championship for a second time. The two lost the championship at Driven to the team of Kevin Steen and El Generico. Black had a second chance at the ROH World Championship at Death Before Dishonor VI in New York City, when he faced McGuinness, Danielson and Claudio Castagnoli in a four-way elimination match, but McGuinness retained the title.

At Final Battle 2008, after Black lost a number one contender match to Austin Aries, Jacobs turned on him, and Black was then attacked by Aries. At Full Circle, Black was given a non-title match against then ROH World Champion Nigel McGuinness on January 16, and defeated McGuinness. The following night, number one contender Aries refused to face McGuinness, so Black faced McGuinness instead, but was unsuccessful as the match ended in a time limit draw. On June 26 at Violent Tendencies, Black defeated Jimmy Jacobs in a steel cage match to end their feud.

ROH World Champion (2009-10)[edit]

In September 2008, Black had surgery on a bulging disc in his neck. On October 10, Black defeated Kenny King in a first round match and then then Claudio Castagnoli, Colt Cabana, Delirious, Chris Hero and Roderick Strong in the finals to win the 2009 Survival of the Fittest tournament, which earned him a match for the ROH World Championship. On December 19 at Final Battle 2009, ROH's first live pay-per-view, Black wrestled then ROH World Champion Austin Aries to a 60-minute time limit draw. Because of this draw, then ROH commissioner Jim Cornette booked the two in a rematch between February 13, 2010 for the company's Eighth Anniversary Show. The booking saw Cornette set up a judging panel with himself on and one person picked by each competitor, in order for there to be a decisive winner in case of another draw. Aries picked Kenny King while Black picked Roderick Strong, whom he guaranteed an ROH World Championship title shot should he win. At the event, Black pinned Aries to win the ROH World Championship.

On April 3, Black retained the title in a three-way elimination match against Austin Aries and Roderick Strong at The Big Bang! pay-per-view, thereby depriving Strong of his championship chance in a singles match. He also retained the title on June 19 at the following pay-per-view, Death Before Dishonor VIII, in a match against Davey Richards. Black turned into a villain at the August 20 tapings of Ring of Honor Wrestling after news broke that he had signed a developmental contract with World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). His new villainous character involved him criticizing the fans who were labeling him a sell-out for signing with WWE, a feeling Osborne has stated was based on true feelings. He also threatened to take the ROH World Championship with him to WWE and refused to put the championship at stake in a match with Davey Richards on August 28 which he then lost by submission. On September 11 at Glory By Honor IX, in what would have been his final ROH appearance, Black lost the ROH World Championship to Roderick Strong in a no disqualification match with Terry Funk as a guest enforcer, ending his reign at 210 days after seven successful title defences.

Total Non-Stop Action Wrestling (2002-10)[edit]

Championship Reigns (2002-07)[edit]

In 2002, Devitt joined the newly founded NWA-TNA where he was given the gimmick of Christian Daniels. He was part of Vince Russo's Sports Entertainment Xtreme stable within which he, Low Ki and Elix Skipper were put together in a team called Triple X which won the NWA World Tag Team Championship three times. Triple X disbanded in June 2003 after Low Ki began primarily wrestling in Japan and Daniels and Skipper lost a match to America's Most Wanted. Daniels briefly feuded with Jeff Jarrett in August and September 2003. He then regularly wrestled singles matches in the X Division, before rejoining with Skipper in July 2004. They were forced to disband after losing to America's Most Wanted again, on December 5 at Turning Point.

In 2005, Daniels had a long feud with A.J. Styles over the TNA X Division Championship. He won the title at Destination X in an Ultimate X Challenge with a screwjob ending. Styles had retrieved the belt, but the referee was unconscious. Daniels hit Styles with his Angel's Wings finisher and took the belt when the ref woke. He became the longest-reigning X Division champion, holding the belt for over 150 days. During this run, he defended against Elix Skipper, Shocker, Petey Williams, Matt Bentley, Chris Sabin, and Austin Aries. On September 11, at Unbreakable, he lost the title to Styles in a three-way dance (with Samoa Joe), when Styles reversed an Angels Wings attempt into a pin. This match received a 5-star rating from Dave Meltzer.

On November 13, 2005, at Genesis, Daniels sustained a (storyline) concussion after being attacked by Samoa Joe and taking a Muscle Buster onto a chair, following a tag match together. At Turning Point, when Joe tried to similarly injure A.J. Styles after winning the X Division Championship from him, Daniels returned and attacked Joe, enabling security guards to protect Styles and restrain Joe. At Final Resolution, Daniels lost to Joe when Styles threw in the towel to protect Daniels, badly beaten and defenseless, from further damage. The next week, Daniels accused Styles of doing this to get the number one contendership for the X Division Title. That night, he cost Styles a match against Shannon Moore by throwing in the towel. At Against All Odds, Joe retained the title in a three-way match against Daniels and Styles. Daniels won the title in an Ultimate X match the next month, and lost it to Joe on April 13, after taking a second rope Island Driver.

Daniels was then scheduled to face Jushin Thunder Liger in a cage match at Lockdown, but Liger pulled out of the match. Instead, he faced a mystery opponent, who turned out to be the returning Low Ki (now named Senshi), who defeated him. Daniels turned face by teaming with A.J. Styles and becoming the number one contender for the NWA Tag Team Championship, held by America's Most Wanted. Daniels and Styles won the title at Slammiversary. They then feuded with The Latin American Xchange (LAX), trading the title back and forth with Homicide and Hernandez. On November 16, Daniels defeated Styles and Chris Sabin in a three-way match on the primetime debut of TNA Impact! on Spike TV, by pinning Sabin, to win his third TNA X Division Championship. He lost it to Sabin in a three-way bout at Final Resolution, also involving Jerry Lynn.

Daniels then took time off from TNA. He made his return, as a heel, at Destination X, distracting Lynn during his match with Sabin. After the match, the newly bearded Daniels, sporting tribal-styled paint on one side of his face, hit Sabin with the Angel's Wings and Lynn with the X Division title belt. At Lockdown, Daniels pinned Jerry Lynn in a cage match. At Sacrifice, Daniels pinned Rhino after hitting him with a baseball bat. Daniels then feuded with Sting, costing him a King of the Mountain match qualifier by hitting him with a baseball bat. Sting attacked him the next week on Impact!. On June 17, 2007, at Slammiversary, Sting pinned him after the Scorpion Death Drop. According to Daniels, the feud ended before start because Vince Russo did not know what to do with his Fallen Angel gimmick.

At Victory Road, Daniels won a 10-Man Ultimate X Gauntlet Match to become the number one contender for the X Division Championship. Senshi and Elix Skipper helped Daniels to win the match, resulting in the reunion of Triple X. At Bound for Glory on October 14, Daniels unsuccessfully challenged for Jay Lethal's X Division Championship. On the December 6 episode of TNA Impact!, Daniels beat Senshi in a match for his "Feast or Fired" briefcase, refereed by Elix Skipper. The next week, the briefcase was revealed to contain a pink slip, meaning Daniels was fired from TNA.

Suicide and departure (2009-10)[edit]

In early 2009, Daniels returned to TNA and began playing the role of the masked Suicide, while Frankie Kazarian (the original Suicide) recovered from injury. As Suicide, he won the X Division Championship in an Ultimate X match at Destination X. On April 11, Daniels returned to television under his "Fallen Angel" gimmick. He defeated Kurt Angle to give Jeff Jarrett's team the first-man advantage in Lethal Lockdown, at Lockdown. He was then announced as a member of Team Jarrett. The win was overturned by Jeff Jarrett, after he noticed Angle's shoulder was up during the pinfall and Daniels' shoulders were down. At Lockdown, Team Jarrett defeated Team Angle.

Daniels then feuded with Alex Shelley and Chris Sabin (The Motor City Machine Guns), who, on the April 30 Impact!, accused him of being Suicide. On the May 7 Impact!, Jay Lethal and Consequences Creed echoed the accusations. On the May 14 Impact!, Daniels helped Suicide clear the ring of Shelley, Sabin, Lethal, and Creed after they attempted to unmask him. At Sacrifice, Daniels defeated Suicide to win the TNA X Division Championship. After the match, Daniels saw a replay of the finish, involving Alex Shelley's interference. He said he didn't want to win the belt like that and asked for five extra minutes. The five minutes expired in a draw, and Suicide kept the title.

At Slammiversary, Daniels pinned Shane Douglas in a match with Daniels' job on the line, after hitting the Best Moonsault Ever. At Victory Road, Wrestling Observer's Worst Show of the Year, Daniels lost to Matt Morgan. At Hard Justice, Daniels won the Steel Asylum match to become the number one contender for the X Division Championship, reigniting his feud with champion Samoa Joe. Daniels lost to Joe at No Surrender, then lost a three-way match (also involving Homicide) to him on the following Impact.

At Bound for Glory, Daniels wrestled a six-man Ultimate X match for the X Division Championship, also featuring Alex Shelley, Chris Sabin, Suicide, Homicide and successfully defending champion, Amazing Red. On the November 5 Impact!, Daniels confronted the TNA World Heavyweight Champion, A.J. Styles, and claiming he was just as good a wrestler as Styles, but was not given the same breaks by TNA, which he said was pampering, coddling and spoiling Styles. At Turning Point, Styles retained his title in a three-way match against Daniels and Samoa Joe by pinning Joe. On the November 19 Impact!, Daniels completed his heel turn and teamed with Desmond Wolfe against Styles and Kurt Angle, pinning Styles. At Final Resolution, Daniels unsuccessfully challenged Styles for the World Heavyweight Championship.

The following month at Genesis, Daniels lost to Sean Morley in Morley's TNA debut. On the March 8 Impact!, Daniels vowed to re-ignite the flame of the X Division. That night, he was pinned by X Division Champion Doug Williams in a three-way title match, also involving Kazarian. At Destination X, Daniels competed in a four-way ladder match for the number one contendership for the X Division title, and was defeated by Kazarian. Two days later, Daniels defeated Kazuchika Okada in a dark match at the Impact! taping.

Devitt was released from his TNA contract on March 31, 2010, after nearly eight years with the company.

WWE[edit]

Florida Championship Wrestling (2010-12)[edit]

On August 8, Devitt had signed a developmental contract with WWE and was assigned to their developmental territory Florida Championship Wrestling (FCW) in September. He had been offered contracts from TNA and ROH, but Evan Bourne, Tyson Kidd and Natalya convinced him to join WWE. On September 14, Osborne (as Finn Devitt) made his WWE debut in a dark match prior to the SmackDown taping by defeating Trent Barreta.

Devitt debuted for FCW on September 30 in a loss to Michael McGillicutty. Devitt then faced Hunico on November 4 in the first ever FCW 15 match under 15-minute Iron Man rules where they fought to a 1-1 draw. Following this, Devitt, along with Hunico, Richie Steamboat and Jinder Mahal, participated in the FCW 15 Jack Brisco Classic tournament. On January 13, 2011, Devitt defeated Hunico in the finals to win the tournament and became the inaugural FCW 15 Champion. On March 25 at a live event, Devitt and Richie Steamboat defeated Damien Sandow and Titus O'Neill to win the FCW Florida Tag Team Championship. Devitt and Steamboat eventually lost the championship to Big E Langston and Calvin Raines.

In July 2011, Devitt began a feud with Dean Ambrose. Ambrose and Devitt had their first match for the FCW 15 Championship in a 15-minute Iron Man match on the August 14 episode of FCW, which ended in a draw with neither men scoring a fall and, as a result, Devitt retained his title. A subsequent 20-minute rematch for the title two weeks later resulted in a similar 0-0 draw. A second 30-minute rematch for the title on the September 18 episode of FCW went to a time limit 2-2 draw and the match was sent into sudden death rules, where Devitt scored a pinfall to win the match 3-2. On September 22, Devitt lost the FCW 15 Championship to Damien Sandow by disqualification after Ambrose attacked Sandow late in the match

The following year, Devitt was teamed with Corey Graves and the pair became the FCW Tag Team Champions in March, holding the titles until June 2012. During the match, Devitt suffered a leg fracture which kept him from television.

First NXT Run (2012-15)[edit]

Upon his return, FCW had been rebranded to NXT Wrestling and he re-debuted as Finn Bálor on the January 16 2013 episode of NXT, where he defeated Sakamoto. Together with Oliver Grey, he became one half of the inaugural NXT Tag Team Champions by defeating The Wyatt Family (Luke Harper and Erick Rowan) in the finals on the 13 February episode of NXT. Black and Grey, now billed as British Ambition had earlier defeated 3MB (Heath Slater and Drew McIntyre) in the first round and Kassius Ohno and Leo Kruger in the semi-finals. With Grey out injured with a torn ACL (in storyline inflicted by the Wyatt Family), Bálor chose Bo Dallas as his new partner in April. On 24 April on NXT, Black lost to Antonio Cesaro while challenging for his United States Championship. On the 8 May episode of NXT, Bálor and Dallas failed in their first defence of the tag title when they lost them to the Wyatt Family.

On the 29 May episode of NXT, Bálor competed in an NXT Championship number one contender battle royal, eliminating Mason Ryan and Bray Wyatt (who had eleven and two eliminations respectively) to make it to the final two participants, but his former tag partner Dallas eliminated him to win the match. Later, Dallas won his title match to become NXT Champion. Bálor continued his feud with the Wyatt Family by losing to them in two six-man tag matches, once while teaming with Corey Graves and Kassius Ohno, and once with Graves and William Regal. On 20 June, Bálor regained the NXT Tag Team Championship from the Wyatt Family with a new partner in Graves. On 6 August episode of NXT, he faced Dean Ambrose for his United States Championship, which Ambrose retained when the other members of The Shield caused a disqualification. Bálor and Graves lost the title to The Ascension (Conor O'Brian and Rick Victor) in September. Following this, the two feuded after failing to regain the title.

Bálor first became number one contender to the NXT Championship on the 27 November episode of NXT by defeating Sami Zayn, after both men previously tied a beat the clock challenge. He faced former tag partner Bo Dallas for the title on the next episode and won by countout, which meant that the title did not change hands. Two episodes later, Bálor faced Dallas again for the title in a lumberjack match, but lost when lumberjack Tyler Breeze interfered. Bálor once again became number one contender after Dallas failed to defeat him in a beat-the-clock challenge match on the 22 January episode of NXT that arose due to Dallas' boasting. At NXT Arrival, Bálor won the NXT Championship from Dallas in a ladder match. A rematch was scheduled for the 20 March episode of NXT, which he won after debuting a new finisher, the Coup de Grâce.

Bálor's first feud as champion began following a non-title match against Brodus Clay, where Bálor won by countout. The feud ended with Bálor scoring a No Disqualification match victory over Clay to successfully defend the NXT Championship. At NXT TakeOver, Bálor successfully defended the NXT Championship against Tyson Kidd. Two weeks later, Bálor retained his championship against Kidd again after Natalya prevented Kidd from using a chair. On the 31 July episode of NXT, he successfully defended his title against Tyler Breeze by disqualification as Tyson Kidd attacked Bálor. On 8 September, Bálor made his first appearance on Raw as part of an 'NXT showcase' match to promote NXT TakeOver: Fatal 4-Way, he teamed with Sami Zayn to defeat Kidd and Breeze in a tag team match. On 11 September at the NXT TakeOver: Fatal 4-Way event, Bálor successfully defended his NXT Championship against Sami Zayn, Tyler Breeze and Tyson Kidd in a fatal four-way match. Later on 11 December, at the NXT TakeOver: R Evolution event, Bálor lost the championship to Zayn, ending his reign at 287 days. When Zayn offered a handshake, Bálor kicked it away and instead hugged Zayn in respect.

The following week on the 18 December episode of NXT, Bálor faced Kevin Owens, but the match ended in a double countout. Owens powerbombed Bálor into the apron after the match. Bálor received a rematch on the 15 January 2015 episode of NXT, but failed to regain the title. Bálor went on to compete in a NXT Championship number one contender's tournament, defeating Tyson Kidd in the quarterfinals on 28 January and Baron Corbin in the semifinals on 4 February but lost.

Promotion to Raw (2015)[edit]

On the 30 March 2015 episode of Raw, Bálor made his main roster debut, defeating Curtis Axel.[67] He then defeated Bad News Barrett at the Extreme Rules pay-per-view the following month. Following this, Bálor competed in the 2015 King of the Ring tournament, where he was defeated by Barrett in the finals. Following this, Bálor would begin a feud with Bo Dallas, setting up a match at Elimination Chamber, which he won.

NXT Champion (2015-16)[edit]

In July 2015, Bálor returned to NXT where he received a title shot against Kevin Owens Owens at The Beast in the East in Tokyo, Japan and defeated Owens to win the NXT Championship for a second time. Bálor defeated Owens in a ladder match to retain the title at NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn on 22 August. Bálor later entered the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic tournament in August, pairing with Samoa Joe and defeating The Lucha Dragons (Sin Cara and Kalisto) in the first round, Enzo Amore and Colin Cassady in the quarter-finals, Dash Wilder and Scott Dawson in the semi-finals and Baron Corbin and Rhyno in the finals at NXT TakeOver: Respect to win the tournament.
