The North Carolina A&T Aggies Track and Field program represents North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University in the sports of indoor & outdoor track and field and cross country. Located in Greensboro, North Carolina, the program competes at the Division I level of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and is a member of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). The Aggies host their home outdoor meets at Irwin Belk Track at Aggie Stadium and their indoor meets at the JDL Fast Track in nearby Winston-Salem.

History[edit]

Venues[edit]

Irwin Belk Track at Aggie Stadium

The Aggies host their home track meets at Irwin Belk Track inside Aggie Stadium. The facility, installed in 2004, is named after the former president of Belk Department Stores and a major financial contributor to the project. The surface is Mondo Super X Performance track and features eight 48-inch lanes and wide turns.[2] Belk Track has played host to many regional, national, and international events, such as International Friendship & Freedom Games, the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships, the NCAA Division I Track and Field Championships – East Regional, the New Balance Outdoor Nationals (formerly the Nike Outdoor Nationals), and the USATF National Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships.[3]

Since the program's inception in 1930, the Aggies have had XX coaches in their 84-year history. Roy Thompson Jr. holds the distinction of winning the most conference championships at five. Notable athletes[edit]

The track and field program over the years has created a number of All Americans. Alumni have gone on to compete in international competitions such as the Olympics, Pan-American Games and win championships in other professional sports such as Football.

There have been several members of the track and field team that lettered in other sports, particularly football. Football Hall of Famer Elvin Bethea was a standout in Discus and Shot Put and won the 1965 NAIA National Championship in the latter. Additionally NFL Running Back Tarik Cohen and former Wide Receiver Desmond Lawrence ran track during the football offseason. Lawrence holds the MEAC record in the 60 meters and is also the only male athlete in A&T history to earn All-American honors in outdoor and indoor track and field.[4]

Olympians[edit]

Aggie Track & Field alumni have represented 3 Countries in 3 different Summer Olympic Games. The first, and most notable Aggie olympian is Bob Beamon, who won a gold medal, and set a world record, in the Men's long jump at the 1968 Summer Olympic Games in Mexico City, Mexico
