CYCLING UP PATRICKS HILL

They say to walk up Saint Patricks Hill in Cork City is an achievement in itself, But to try this on a bike well that's a different matter. Back in the sixty’s and the seventies cars were far and few in Cork but everyone had a bike of some sorts. From the butcher boy delivering his meat, to the Echo boy dropping off the daily newspaper. Nearly every bike would be off a type of bike called a high nelly which was a big heavy robust bike with no gears, not like the bikes of today which have about 32 gears and are made from a very light alloy. Now cycling the big high nelly to the top of Patricks Hill would be the challenge of the day for every bike owner and each would be asked the same question did you do it. So off you would go but not like the bikes of today which are well able to cycle straight up the hill at speed. You would have to go from side to side like a snake crawling up the hill keeping your balance and making sure your feet never touch the ground or you would have to start again if you had the energy.

THE 100 TIMES CHALLENGE

Last September 2012 a man by the name of Donncha Cuttriss cycled up Patrick's hill 100 times in under six hours which was never done before.Donncha took this challenge to raise funds and awareness for Mayfield Action on Suicide and raised in excess of 2.500 euros which was fantastic, and from now on he will defiantly be known as king of the hill.

SCHOOLS AND COLLEGES

On Patrick's Hill you have a varied amount of schools and colleges .Starting at the top and literally king of the castle is Bruce College

next on the way down is a side door entrance to Christian Brothers College http://www.cbccork.ie. Down we go again until we meet St Angela's College.

THE VIEW

The view from the top of the hill of right down Patrick's street and beyond is one of the best views of the city and is some reward for the long hard climb up the hill really well worth it. As the hill levels off and changes its name to Audley Place you get to see a lot more of cork city and the suburbs, and one of corks well known tourist attractions Shandon. Which was built in 1722 as THE CHURCH OF SAINT ANNE and has four clocks built in one facing north south east and west and was built so that the poor people of cork knew what time it was to take their medicines. Also known as the four liars as the four clocks never tell the same time
