Ion Pillat (March 31, 1891, Bucharest – April 17, 1945, Bucharest) grew up in a large city in Romania called Bucharest. That is where he became a distinguished Romanian poet. He is best known for his volume Pe Argeş în sus (Upstream on the Argeş) and Poeme într-un vers (One-line poems). After he completed his lower education, he went on to study at the University of Paris from 1910 to 1914. Soon after obtaining his law degree, he returned back to his hometown, the city of Bucharest. His maternal grandfather was Ion Brătianu who was one of the major political figures of 19th century Romania. Sadly, he past away just a few months after his grandson, Ion Pillat, was born.

Biography[edit]

Ion Pillat was born Tuesday, March 31st, 1891 in the city of Bucharest. Bucharest is located in the southeast of Romania and is its largest city. Growing up in such a large city provided Ion Pillat with as much as a young man could handle. His grandfather, Ion Brătianu, was a big reason why Ion Pillat was able to be as successful as he was. Ion Brătianu died shortly after the birth of his grandson, Ion Pillat. Although they never technically met, Pillat in a sense, followed in footsteps similar to his grandfather. Ion Brătianu was a very wealthy man. Entering the army, ruling over Romania during the critical years of 1876-1888, and becoming a respected writer are three impressive facts about him. Ion Pillat carried on his legacy in a more moderate way, yet showing that he has at least some of his grandfather's talent. Both Pillat and his grandfather studied in Paris. With his degree in Law, Ion Pillat returned back to Bucharest where he would become a lawyer of some type. He then started to write poems, and became a famous Romanian poet. His creative and "Beautiful" way of writing one-line poems was most impressive thing about his career as a poet. Other poets would write one-line poems, but not in the same smooth, calm mannor that Ion Pillat was able to do.

Education[edit]

University of Paris

After his earlier education in Bucharest, Pillat went on and studied at the University of Paris. The University of Paris is one of the oldest universities in all of Europe, dating back to the mid 12th century. There are thirteen separate universities that are under the title of The University of Paris. These thirteen colleges are called successor universities, and are all variations of one another, making up The University of Paris. A detailed list of these different universities broken down can be found by clicking on University of Paris. This campus was in Paris of course, which allowed for an urban setting for the students. Ion Pillat was very accustom to living in a large city, so that was no problem for him leaving home to an overwhelming city. He was an excellent student. Pillat was able to concentrate on his studies while being in the city of Paris. He studied at the University of Paris from 1910-1914, and received his degree in Law. Soon after receiving his degree, he returned home to Bucharest to start his career there.

Poetry[edit]

At some point after studying at the University of Paris, Ion Pillat became interested in poetry. His grandfather was a writer himself, which had an impact on the success of Pillat. Still after studying Law, he managed to become a distinguished Romanian poet. Today, he is known for two main points. First off, he is most famous for his volume Pe Argeş în sus which stands for "Upstream on the Arges". Ion Pillat is also famous for his use of One-Line poems. Ion Pillat enjoyed writing poems about many different topics. His main topics were one-line poems about animals. Any animal from dolphins to pheasants. Another one of his favorite topics was nature. This allowed him to use descriptive words that could catch the audience. Mountains, seas, weather, fire, and forests were some of the topics that Pillat wrote his poems about. Ion Pillat is said to be an excellent representative of Romanian Traditionalism, as well as a world-range poet. Being the first poet to define the use of one line poems, rewarded Ion Pillat with a sense of credibility as he went on and wrote many classic one-line poems. His definition was "A single Panflute, but how many echoes in the words". Back in the time of Ion Pillat, one-line poems were a new type of poetry. Now there are many poets who write or have written one-line poems, because of the increase in the popularity of them. When compared to Florentin Smarandache, Ion Pillat was a much more collected person. Pillat's work gave him a reputation of being a "Beautiful Writer", while Smarandache was more of a harsh writer who wrote in an eager, troubled way. Ion Pillat made a change to the world of poetry, and still to this day, one-line poems are written and read because of the way Pillat introduced them to us.

Family Connections[edit]

Ion C. Brătianu in later life

Ion Pillat's grandfather was Ion Brătianu. It goes without saying that Pillat was named (Ion) after his grandfather. Ion Bratianu's family was very wealthy and grew up in Wallachia, Romania. Bratianu died a few short months after the birth of his grandson Pillat. Although Ion Pillat would not be able to remember his grandfather, there was plenty of stories and history that he would have been told about his special grandfather. Ion Bratianu lived a full life to say the least. Besides the fact that he was born into a wealthy family, he also joined the Wallachian Army where he served for three years. Just like his grandson, Pillat, he studied in Paris. After serving in the Army, he then moved to Paris for his education. The most impressive thing about Ion Bratianu was that he served as the Prime Minister of Romania. He was in office from 1881 until 1888. Besides having a fortunate childhood, serving in the Army, ruling over Romania, Bratianu still found time to become a writer. One of his writings was "Musings on the Situation" which he wrote in 1856. For Ion Pillat to have such a talented grandfather, it was easy for him to use that to his advantage. Although Bratianu might have been more well known by the public, they both lived very talented lives, and successful careers.
