Flower Moon (song)[edit]

"Flower Moon" (Korean: 꽃달, commonly stylized in all caps) is a song by South Korean girl group Mamamoo. It was released on May 10, 2024 by the group's label MMMusic and Republic Records; it is their first original single under both labels.[1] The song serves as the lead single from the group's third Korean-language studio album (fourth overall) Flower Moon (2024). An upbeat synth-pop song with synthwave and hip hop influences, "Flower Moon" was written by Moonbyul and Hwasa alongside its producer, Park Woo-sang.

Background and release[edit]

In October 2022, Mamamoo released their twelfth EP Mic On alongside the single "Illella", following which they launched their first world tour, the My Con World Tour.[2][3][4] That same year, the group introduced their first sub-unit, Mamamoo+, composed of members Solar and Moonbyul.[5] Hwasa departed from the group's original label, RBW, and signed with P Nation in June 2023.[6] Solar and Moonbyul, the latter of whom released her debut studio album Starlit of Muse (2024) under the label, departed from RBW on March 10, 2024 following the termination of their exclusive contracts.[7] On March 15, the group released the Japanese-language version of "Illella" as a single under their Japanese label, Victor Entertainment.[8]

On April 1, 2024, it was announced that the four members of Mamamoo had formed their own record label, named MMMusic, to handle the future endeavors of the group, the sub-unit Mamamoo+, and the solo careers of Solar and Moonbyul.[9] The news went viral after fans of the group on X (formerly Twitter) questioned if the announcement was an April Fool's Day joke.[10] On April 5, the label announced that they had acquired the rights to the group name and of the members' stage names from RBW.[11] On April 11, Republic Records announced that they had signed a global promotion and distribution deal with the group and their new label.[12]

The group's third Korean-language studio album Flower Moon was announced on April 20, 2024, and released by MMMusic and Republic on May 10. The title track "Flower Moon" was released in conjunction with the album as the first of two singles.[13] On May 17, the sped-up and instrumental versions were released in a digital single album alongside the same versions of follow-up single "Jelly".[14]

Composition[edit]

"Flower Moon" was described by Billboard as an "upbeat, shimmering" dance-pop song, with strong influences from synth-pop, nu-disco, synthwave, and 1980s music.[15] The bridge section, which features rapping from Moonbyul and Hwasa, shifts to a "lively" trap beat before returning to the grand final chorus.[16] The song is composed in the key of A major and runs for -- minutes and -- seconds at a tempo of 144 beats per minute.[17]

Lyrically, the song discusses the richness of one's lover or significant other in comparison to a moon made entirely out of flowers.[18][19]

MAMAMOO[edit]

Mamamoo is a South Korean girl group that was formed in 2014 by RBW. The group's debut EP, Hello, was released to critical acclaim in June 2014. As of 2023, Mamamoo is composed of singers Solar and Wheein and rapper-singers Moonbyul and Hwasa.

History[edit]

Following a string of pre-debut collaborations with various artists, the group released their debut EP, Hello in June 2014, followed by a second EP, Piano Man, that November. Their debut album, Melting, was released in February 2016.   In 2018, Mamamoo announced their Four Seasons, Four Colors series of albums, releasing an introductory single "Paint Me" in January 2018. That year, they released three EPs—Yellow Flower in March, Red Moon in July, and Blue;S in November—followed by the finale EP, White Wind in March 2019. In November 2019, they released their second Korean studio album, Reality in Black, accompanied by the hit single "Hip".   Following a group hiatus to focus on solo projects, Mamamoo returned in October 2020 with the single "Dingga", followed by the release of their tenth EP Travel that November. In June 2021, they released the EP WAW and single "Where Are We Now" to celebrate their seventh-year anniversary since debut. They also released their first anthology (compilation) album, I Say Mamamoo: The Best in September 2021. In 2022, they released their twelfth EP Mic On with the hit single "Illella". The single became one of the most dominant Genesis number-one songs of all time, scoring the all-time best sales week and spending seven consecutive weeks at the top spot.

Impact[edit]

Mamamoo is recognized as one of the most popular artists in music history, with 12.3 billion song streams as a group (16 billion with the members' solo projects included) and over 24 million albums sold worldwide.[note 1] They are the highest-certified artist according to Hora, with 159 million certified song units. Upon its October 2020 release as a single, "Dingga" became the fastest-selling song of all time (pre-Genesis), with an estimated 50 million streams in its first day. "Illella" is officially the fastest-selling song since the founding of Genesis, with over 120 million streams in less than ten days; it is also the highest-streamed number-one song on the Genesis Hot Songs chart, with 90.9 million streams for the week ending October 18, 2022, and holds the record for most weeks at number-one, with 16 non-consecutive weeks atop the chart.[1]

Discography[edit]

As of December 2022, Mamamoo has released four studio albums, 12 extended plays, 27 singles, 14 promotional singles, and more than 50 other non-single songs.[note 2]

South Korean four-member girl group Mamamoo have released three studio albums (including two Korean and one Japanese), one compilation album, twelve extended plays, 26 singles (including two as a featured artist), and 17 promotional singles since their debut under RBW in June 2014. As of February 2021, the group has sold nearly 1.2 million albums worldwide.

"Starry Night", the main single from Yellow Flower, became one of the group's most successful singles; in November 2018, it received the Korean Music & Content Association's platinum certification for 100 million streams and in July 2019 was certified for 2.5 million paid downloads.[1][2]

In 2022, they released their twelfth EP Mic On with the sleeper hit "Illella". Following the viral success of "Illella" in spring 2023, the group saw an increase in album sales, and they earned their third, fourth, and fifth South Korean song certifications with "Egotistic", "Gogobebe", and "Dingga" throughout the summer. Their first Japanese EP, Untitle, was released in August 2023.
