Hermann Kahan[edit]

Created by Iselilja (talk). Self nominated at 20:45, 8 January 2014 (UTC).

  • Article was created on January 3, 2014, has 2399 characters, and is well-sourced. However, the hook does not have a source directly following it, and I think it would be more interesting if you included that he was found in a pit of corpses. I will complete my review once you've responded here. Thanks, Ruby 2010/2013 02:27, 9 January 2014 (UTC)
  • Thanks. You are right the source wasn't right after the hook fact. You are also right that it would be more interesting to add that he was found in a pile of corpses. I deliberated avoided that specific fact, out of fear that it might be a bit to sensational about a grave, traumatic fate. (There is a background story here, where a Norwegian journalist was critised for asking Kahan live on TV "So, you were found in a pile of corpses?" But having the fact as a hook may be less sensitive than asking the person to tell about it; with little time to respond). An alternative hook will cover two sentences; I have added the source to the last of them.
  • ALT1 ... that Hermann Kahan was found alive in a pile of corpses in Ebensee concentration camp by American forces who liberated the camp?

  • Ah, I see. I personally don't find such a horrific incident to be sensational, but I can see why some would. Both hooks look good, so I'll let the DYK admin choose. Nice work (AGF on the Norwegian hook citation). Ruby 2010/2013 04:38, 11 January 2014 (UTC)
  • Comment Btw, I found a link discussing the interview mentioned above here. "Found in a pile of corpses" should be avoided. It is too passive a statement for a such a horrific situation. The sentence should put the situation in context. Maybe something like, "Left for dead, he was rescued from a pile of corpses."--Bkwillwm (talk) 08:01, 12 January 2014 (UTC)
  • I disagree with Bkwillwm's view. Jews were not "left for dead" in the concentration camps – they were disposed of for the flimsiest reason. ALT1 is suitably hooky and tells exactly what happened. I added some additional information from the source to fill in the article content. Article is new enough, long enough, adequately referenced, no close paraphrasing seen. Foreign language hook ref AGF (I viewed it on Google Translate) and cited inline. QPQ done. ALT1 good to go. Yoninah (talk) 21:54, 26 January 2014 (UTC)
