Calais jungle[edit]

Created by Philafrenzy (talk) and Edwardx (talk). Nominated by Philafrenzy (talk) at 22:48, 1 July 2015 (UTC).

  • Please provide a citation to the text under the section "Origin of the term". Otherwise the article conforms to DYK rules in respect of length, date of posting and hook reference. No copy vio has been noted. QPQ done.--Nvvchar. 14:58, 11 July 2015 (UTC)
  • I have changed it just to say that the origin of the name is unknown. I don't see how I can cite that unless I find an article saying so (which my researches did not reveal), nor does it feel right to delete the section entirely? Philafrenzy (talk) 16:06, 11 July 2015 (UTC)
I see that the section has been removed entirely by someone else. I won't put it back so we should be good to go? Philafrenzy (talk) 10:27, 12 July 2015 (UTC)
As the unsourced section has been deleted, I have no other issues except to give a green tick..--Nvvchar. 21:05, 13 July 2015 (UTC)
I was going to promote this to the prep area but feel using a figure, such as 1000, is risky because the number of migrants is variable, the figure is not up to date and is only an estimate anyway. I think a completely different hook is needed. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 05:42, 22 July 2015 (UTC)
I think you are worrying unnecessarily. The figure is sourced to The Guardian in April 2015 and we can use it in the same way they do, as obviously an estimate of something for which no exact number is possible. It is in the spirit of DYK hook catchiness and I think readers will not be at all mislead. Philafrenzy (talk) 07:11, 22 July 2015 (UTC)
Well, I did a search to see if there were any more up to date figures and found this source from July 5th which says up to 3000. You could have something like
  • ALT1 ... that hundreds of people are living in a jungle in Calais, France?
  • ALT2 ... that hundreds of people are living in a jungle on sand dunes near Calais, France? Cwmhiraeth (talk) 08:12, 22 July 2015 (UTC)
I don't think 2 is accurate but Alt1 with thousands rather than hundreds might work:
The word "thousands" must mean at least 2000 and the article does not support that claim, - the word "hundreds" is safer. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 10:02, 22 July 2015 (UTC)
Half way down it says "practically no toilets (20 for 3,000 people)"? Philafrenzy (talk) 10:07, 22 July 2015 (UTC)
Hmm. If you add the more recent information, like the source I mentioned above, I would not object to "thousands". Cwmhiraeth (talk) 11:16, 22 July 2015 (UTC)
Done. Philafrenzy (talk) 12:25, 22 July 2015 (UTC)
