Actually this style -- sometimes called the cossack hat -- was rather popular in winter in northern states and Canada back in the 60s and 70s. Had one myself. Bill Earle wore his all the time in the cold months (and, sure enough, he was wearing it when I took this picture). I always thought it looked good on him.
