Scientific Info[edit]

Does anyone know anything about this wood other than it is/was used for staffs and the like? What does it come from? Perhaps then this page could be merged with that page (if it exists) and this just made a redirect. 72.50.169.6 (talk) 06:05, 8 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Dictionary.net gives these definitions for "wax tree":

  (a) A tree or shrub (Ligustrum lucidum) of China, on which certain insects make a thick deposit of a substance resembling white wax.
  (b) A kind of sumac (Rhus succedanea) of Japan, the berries of which yield a sort of wax.
  (c) A rubiaceous tree (Elaeagia utilis) of New Grenada, called by the inhabitants ``arbol del cera.

I only know that the first of those (Chinese privet or wax tree privet) is certainly a source of wax wood, and that seems like the plant described in this article. I don't know about the others.
