Nickname Baldy[edit]

The following comment was transferred here from User talk:Flibirigit. Thanks. Flibirigit (talk) 15:54, 11 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

"Baldy" is, as far as I can see, a college nickname only, not a widely used name in the same was as Magic Johnson. As such it should not appear in the opening name. GiantSnowman 15:42, 11 February 2021 (UTC)

@GiantSnowman: W. B. George was widely known in Canada as "Baldy" well into his old age, and it was not a college nickname only. He was regularly referred to as both Baldy George and W. B. Baldy George in articles from The Canadian Press, and about half of the citations used in this article use the name Baldy. Flibirigit (talk) 15:54, 11 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Your ping didn't work for some reason, but luckily I saw this discussion pop up. So if the sources use the names 'Baldy George' or 'W. B. Baldy George', why is the article located at 'W. B. George'? If there is no easily agreeable name then why don't we simply amend the intro to state "...also known as Baldy George..."? GiantSnowman 16:01, 11 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@GiantSnowman: I chose to name the article W. B. George since slightly less than half of the citations found include Baldy. The nickname is still very common, and I am fine with amending the introduction to state that also known as Baldy George. Flibirigit (talk) 16:06, 11 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I have updated the introduction. Is it satisfactory? Does it need multiple citations? Flibirigit (talk) 16:24, 11 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The lede does not need to be summarised - I suggest that the wording of the article is changed to reflect that this was not just a college nickname but was used intermittently throughout his professional career as well. GiantSnowman 16:43, 11 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The corresponding sentence in the main body has been changed to "He attended Ontario Agricultural College where was known as "Baldy" due to having a lot of hair, and the nickname persisted throughout his professional career". Flibirigit (talk) 16:54, 11 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Much better! GiantSnowman 16:56, 11 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
