This review is transcluded from Talk:Virat Kohli/GA1. The edit link for this section can be used to add comments to the review.

Reviewer: Vensatry (talk · contribs) 05:49, 5 September 2012 (UTC)

The article is way behind the GA material and is a Quick fail.

Comments

General

  • "Kohli stood out, scoring his first Test hundred in Adelaide. Virat Kohli is currently regarded as one of India's potential number three batman in Tests, after the retirement of Rahul Dravid following the Australian tour". Statements like these violate WP:NPOV
  • The section Indian Premier League just defines each season like a string of points
  • What's the need to have another section like "ODI Carrer (2012-Present)" after Tests. You've already split both the formats.

Unsourced statements

  • He was bought for $30,000 before the first season in 2008. He did not perform well, scoring only 165 runs in 13 innings at an average of 15 and taking only 2 wickets with his bowling.
  • The third para in "Youth cricket and early career" contains just a single source. Same with the next two seasons
  • Section header "ODI specialist (2008–2011)" reads like a POV statement and except for the first line rest of the text is unsourced
  • His second test hundred is unsourced

Sourcing

  • Ref #12 is dead
  • Although the article uses reliable sources, the ref formatting is extremely poor; very few are properly formatted. Some are just bare URLs and many are incomplete and improperly formatted
  • What makes "cricketnext.in.com" a reliable source
  • Ref #14 uses WP itself as a source

Prose

  • The quality of prose is not upto the level and needs good copyediting. There are several MOS issues in section headers like "Batting Career Summary", "CB Series 2012" and "ODI Carrer" which includes a typo as well. Section headers shouldn't be wikilinked
  • "Records & Achievements" is a mere WP:TRIVIA
  • "Batting Career Summary" is useless; instead useful data like "Man of the Match" and "Man of the Series" can be included
  • One liners like "Kohli made 212 runs in two test matches including one Century and two half Century with Average of 106" should be avoided

Check against the criteria

I'm quick failing this article as this stands nowhere near GA standards. This needs proper reorganizing/re-structuring, expansion with adequate citations. Please read the criteria and work before re-nominating. Vensatry (Ping me) 05:49, 5 September 2012 (UTC)

  • Use of too many quote boxes in the article citing quotes from Kohli on himself. Not informative and unnecessary.
  • Removed two quote boxes, but kept the one which I feel is important. Kohli has stated on several occasions that his father was his biggest inspiration to play cricket and his death made Kohli take up his career more seriously. I think it should be kept in the article. Dee03 00:24, 17 December 2015 (UTC)
  • Examples of use of puffery in the article. Statements like these violate WP:NPOV
    • Kohli was in sublime form
    • Kohli followed it with a resilient
    • He was in sublime form
  • All fixed. Dee03 00:24, 17 December 2015 (UTC)
  • Thank you for taking up the review. Note: I will be available over the next 12 hours to address further concerns, after which I'm gonna be busy until Saturday afternoon. So I may not be able to respond to your comments during that period. Dee03 00:48, 17 December 2015 (UTC)
  • The article overall looks complete, well written and well referenced. The only glaring flaw is the lack of tables for showing scores and records which make the article easy to read and simplifies the text for the reader. In this case the article is cluttered with scores and other statistics which complicate the reading. Check articles Sachin Tendulkar and AB de Villiers as guides for addition of statistics tables. Numerounovedant (talk) 17:49, 17 December 2015
  • I've created a "Statistics" section and added some tables to the article now. I feel de Villiers article has too many tables and the level of detail in each table is too high. GAs generally should not have those many statistical tables. Tables and lists should not outweigh the prose, but that is exactly what's wrong with de Villiers article. Another problem with too many tables is updating them after every match, ie, the tables become outdated if you don't update them regularly, and each update takes up a lot of your time. Dee03 03:42, 19 December 2015 (UTC)
  • I just wanted you to have a look at an article that is better managed with tables, Agree on AB issue, still tables can make reading way easier if used properly.
  • The articles looks good for the time being but can get better. Still it satisfies the criteria for GA. So I am going to pass the article.Numerounovedant (talk)

Statistics section

Is there any reason to include the Statistics section? I think it's a classic case of WP:NOTSTATS. The same section is removed from Steve Smith( ball tamperer) page as per WP:NOTSTATS. For similarity in wikipedia article this section should be deleted.

Yes, sorry I didn't see this earlier but I saw the statistics when I was reading the article and I removed them. Over 50kb in all and none of it providing any context to people who don't know the game. Comments, February 2019

  • The lead is too broad. Probably a reduction of his achievements will help.
  • A right-handed top-order batsman, Kohli is regarded as one of the best batsmen in the world.[3] - Without a doubt, backed up by sources on the lead. However, I am not sure if that's appropriate. Neither the statement nor the sources are mentioned anywhere in the body. I would recomment a separation section titled Reception to elaborately mention the critics.
  • What's a purple patch?
  • I have doubts that Records and achievements have proper coverage. It should be written in prose per WP:USEPROSE.
Have a look at these. THE NEW ImmortalWizard(chat) 18:26, 17 February 2019 (UTC)

Kohli is vegan

My addition to personal life that Kohli is vegan was reverted, with the remark: 'So? why is that significant?' For many vegan well known people it is stated that they are vegan in the 'personal life' section. According to sources, the switch to veganism has benefited his health and athletic performance. https://www.livekindly.com/indian-cricket-captain-virat-kohli-vegan/ — Preceding unsigned comment added by Janvlug (talkcontribs) 15:05, 14 August 2019 (UTC)

That doesn't look like a reliable / NPOV source to me. I'd like to see multiple mentions of it in mainstream press rather than on a vegan advocacy website. Spike 'em (talk) 15:25, 14 August 2019 (UTC)
a) just because other article have stuff on it doesn't mean we shouldn't hold this article to reasonable standards for the inclusion of information - or that editorial decisions shouldn't be made.
b) is it overly significant given Kohli's background that he is a vegan? (see below)
c) has he advocated vegan causes in any significant way? For example, Jason Gillespie is clearly an advocate for veganism and has been vocal about it. Has Kohli? Arguably, given their respective backgrounds, Gillespie's veganism is clearly far more significant.
d) reliable sources - even the Times of India piece is a puff piece and the source you've given is is managing to stretch the impacts of the change into places that, frankly, are a bit stretched to say the least.
Bare facts are pretty tedious. If we can get some, err, meat on the bones then it might be worth including. Perhaps. Blue Square Thing (talk) 18:30, 14 August 2019 (UTC)

In the section titled "Overseas season-including Windies at home," the first line of the last paragraph describes the Border-Gavaskar trophy held in Australia in 2018 as "ongoing." Please rectify this mistake. The line may be changed to On 16 December 2018 in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy held in Australia, Kohli scored his 25th test hundred in Perth. This link can be provided as citation that shows the scorecard containing the century. This link can be provided as citation stating that the century was Virat's 25th. Why virat kohli is better than Rohit sharma

Virat kohli is far better than Rohit sharma because virat kohli performance in all three format is to good but rohit sharma two format.
