That pronunciation key for his name is dead wrong. I don't know who wrote the NBA.com page, but in Russian it sounds like this: "Hr-IA-pa." Simple. The H is NOT silent - just pronounce it like the H at the start of Hello. I don't know why many English speakers have trouble with this. It's probably because some smart-alec began transliterating the sound as "Kh" - I can understand maybe why the K is there (responsible for a slight modification of sound), but really - English speakers end up making a big deal out of the K and basically just pronouncing it without regard for the H.

I think you are mistaking how the Ha-RAP-ah sounds. The H is capitalized because it is NOT silent. --Djsasso 18:43, 7 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

An anonymous user claims that the pronunciation of Khryapa's name, as sourced to NBA.com, should be labeled as an American English pronunciation. See this edit, for example. In some of his edit summaries, he has quoted the MOS, which says, "Transcriptions should always have a label identifying what language they are transcribing."

Do other users believe that we need the "American English" qualifier? Zagalejo^^^ 17:59, 7 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I don't believe we need the qualifier as I don't believe that that pronunciation is American English. Viktor is not pronounced Veek-tor in American English, however it is in Russian. --Djsasso 18:36, 7 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The MOS says we do need a qualifier. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.192.62.249 (talk) 18:42, 9 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I am not arguing that we don't need a qualifier. I am arguing that its not American English. --Djsasso 20:04, 9 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
If it's neither AmE nor Russian, we should remove it altogether. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.192.62.249 (talk) 08:13, 10 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
So I will remove it. 83.192.55.43 (talk) 09:40, 28 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Except that it is sourced so again it is a valid piece of information. You need to find something showing that it is not Russian. --Djsasso (talk) 16:03, 28 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
