"His parents are members of the Tonkinese nobility". So is he Vietnamese or Spaniard? During the time when he is supposed to be beheaded, Vietnam was in a period of civil war, when the Tay Son brothers are overthrowing the Nguyen Lords and Trinh Lords, I doubt any Vietnamese "king" during this time would have time to oversee a trial of a Christian. I'm afraid I don't understand the question. It is clear from the text that he took the name on conversion. Many of the clerics in the area at the time were Spanish, so it isn't impossible that he chose a Spanish name on their suggestion. Regarding the doubts about whether a king would "have the time" to do this, Christianity was explicitly and dramaticlly outlawed in the area at the time, and it seems likely that under those conditions the king might make the time. I don't find any explicit sources for such in my own book or the external links, however, so I'll add the citation needed template there. John Carter 00:45, 23 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
