Military vehicle plates do not begin with an 'M'. They are working through the alphabet (missing out the vowels). Military plates all end with an 'M'. Older military plates with an ‘R’; military vehicles are still referred to as 'R' vehicles in the SANDF. Still older military plates began with a 'U' for Union.

History Info Inaccurate[edit]

White on black was std across the country until the early 1980's - no mention is made of this. Military vehicles had a "R" (Regiment) prefix under the black/white scheme and an "M" (Military) suffix under the black/yellow.

Tabulation of data[edit]

Please can someone tabulate the data into columns -- the page is too long and there is too much wasted space, too.

Some changes I propose for the KZN section[edit]

Having lived and moved around in KZN for my whole life and having taken an interest in number plates, I can only suggest these changes with my knowledge and can't site any references. These, however, are my suggestions:

NH is Harburg municipal region and includes Wartburg area, not Howick. Howick residents register there vehicles either under NP (Pietermaritzburg) or NR (Lions River).

NUF is named for Umfolozi municipal region but also includes Empangeni.

NT is named for Tongaat municipal region but also includes Stanger and Ballito.

Government Garage[edit]

Old (pre-1980) Government vehicles (not military or police) had GG 999-999 registration. I don't know the details or have references, perhaps a wikipedian who is more knowledgable can add info, also current Government vehicles registration is needed Wayne Jayes (talk) 09:36, 29 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know about the old days, but in the table we do mention that current government fleet vehicles are Gxx 999 G. - htonl (talk) 13:13, 29 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Bad links[edit]

Borders of Freestate did change during history[edit]

The writing stating that the Free State Borders never changing, is historically inaccurate. During the original drafting of national borders between Free State and Transvaal Republics in the 1800's it was agreed in writing that the Republic of Orange Free State have its' borders between the Vaal and Orange rivers on the South and North. This meant that Kimberley was part of the OFS Republic. With Rhodes' war for the Diamonds of Kimberley, the borders between the Cape and OFS was trailed in court in Cape Town. This orinal signed agreement between Tvl And OFS republics were mistakenly left at home when travelling the 3 weeks to the Cape Court and was therefore inadmissable in court, resulting in Kimberley (which falls INSIDE the borders of the Original Vaal and Orange Rivers' Borders (and therefore being part of the ROFS), being moved to become part of the Cape. 196.253.245.154 (talk) 06:41, 28 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
