Incorrect Info?[edit]

The explanation with the image of a Karnataka license plate KA 19 P 8488 describes the 'P' as denoting a private vehicle. I think this is not correct. All private vehicles do not start with P. The letter P is currently for private four wheelers in Karnataka, it initially started with M, and N. After P it will continue with Z, and thereafter MA. Currently cars and SUVs are registered under this letter. The meaning private here is supposed to denote non-commercial. I will make that correction.

Really? That's NOT true. I have had vehicles in various states including Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu, NONE OF THEM HAD P in them. You are wrong! See the photo of the number plate on this article's page, it has a P in it. It is on a private car, my car, in Karnataka. This is how the private car series numbers have progressed in Karnataka. KA xx M,N,P,Z,MA. Once it gets to MZ they will start with NA and so on.--PremKudva^Talk 05:23, 6 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Actually Rsrikanth05 above claims to have never seen the letter P on a Karnataka number plate. Which is a major disagreement. Also while I specifically mentioned that Karnataka uses M, N, P for private vehicles [in the article], he goes on to say "Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu" never had a P in their number plates.--PremKudva^Talk 11:04, 6 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, I thought that editor was just saying that not all such plates feature the letter P. But I digress. The phrasing of the caption of the second image of this article ("P is for a non-commercial vehicle") seems to suggest that only P designates non-commercial vehicles, in my opinion. You don't have to be abusive here Rsrikanth05. And dude I never meant P=Private, that is an assumption you made. M, N, P, Z and now MA [IN KARNATAKA] are only issued to non-commercial vehicles. No truck, bus, or taxi cab [IN KARNATAKA] has been issued with these numbers in these series. If your car has no P in it, it means it either has M, N, Z, or MA. MY car is KA-05-MC-2010. My friends car is KA-01-A-4243 My older cars were MH-01-V-4407 and MH-01-DA-7692. The letter P might be exclusive for private vehicles, but it DOES NOT mean, P stands for private. It depends on each state, and for that reason, it would be better if it says P denotes the series instead. I fixed an amusing guess by the writer about the arrow on military vehicles. He had speculated that it was to denote which way it was up should it overturn! The origin is the UK, which shouldn't surprise anyone. This is called the Broad Arrow and it is used on all kinds of military equipment in the British Commonwealth. Its use is declining, but India will keep up the tradition.

Having an image for every state code seems useless. Having one image of a number plate on the side to give an example seems enough.
