Emmanuel College, Cambridge[edit]

I had assumed that Emmanuel College, Cambridge had already qualified with 175 points. But if the series follows the usual format there will be a total of 14 First Round matches. I think the truncated table is the cause of my confusion. Could all future First Round dates be added, even if the teams are not known? Thanks. In the format to qualify for Round 2, the fourteen winning teams of four would score higher than their opponents but the runners up will have a second chance to qualify, if their scores are high enough to be in the top four of the ranking of the scores for the beaten opponents only. With the orange box, that means they will have to win a play-off with another team to progress to Round 2. The fact that Emmanuel College, Cambridge had 175 points does not always get them into the next round as their opponents got a slightly higher score. However, I did not count how many rows there are in the table so I don't think that should be coloured orange yet, my mistake. Iggy (Swan) 21:52, 21 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

In accordance with the edit summary by User:BangJan1999 I am assuming "If it's the same as in previous years, Hertford, Oxford qualify first above Exeter as they got to 150 in fewer bonuses." Is there any source for this tie-break "fewer bonuses" rule? I don't see anything at the main University Challenge article.Thanks. Martinevans123 (talk) 21:21, 16 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Indications of tie break[edit]

Matches which are decided on a tie break are uncommon. The current indication is a score in italics. Could this be made slightly more noticeable, perhaps by using bold italics, for one or both scores? I'm sure the previous 24 series, for which there are articles, could easily be brought in line. Orange and yellow in Quarter finals table[edit]

Teams with orange scores had to win one more match to return in the next round.
Teams with yellow scores indicate that two further matches had to be played and won (teams that lost their first quarter-final match).

These colour allocation seem counter-intuitive to me. as yellow is closer to green (definitely in semi-final) and orange is closer to red (definitely not in semi-final). Martinevans123 (talk) 22:17, 11 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
