Nomenclature[edit]

This is not an easy matter to figure out all these different names. There is Tudhaliya I/II in literature already, why also not Tudhaliya II/III? Y-barton (talk) 03:34, 2 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Confusion[edit]

This article, even after some very recent edits, exhibits a great deal of confusion between King Tudhaliya III (sometimes designated II) and his son Tudhaliya the Younger (sometimes designated III), who might not have reigned at all. Virtually all of the information about the reign actually applies to the father, not the son. As a first step towards fixing this problem, I have created a separate article "Tudhaliya the Younger" with source citation, discussion, annotation, and references. I plan to clean up the present article ("Tudhaliya III") to refer exclusively to the father, with redirection to the son. In terms of the designations of Hittite kings in general, I think we should go with Trevor Bryce, The Kingdom of the Hittites (2005), who maintains the traditional numbering while noting issues with it. Until there is completely decisive evidence that Tudhaliya son of Kantuzzili and Tudhaliya father-in-law of Arnuwanda are one and the same individual (often assumed but debatable and opposed by Jacques Freu 2007, etc), they are best treated as Tudhaliya I and II, respectively (indicating the arguments that they are one and the same), or as Tudhaliya I/II (as done by Bryce 2005).
