Spelling of Name[edit]

The 'Toomyvara' spelling is never used locally and can in no way be considered official. It is however for some reason extensively used on maps. This link

is to the local authority development plan for the village and is as official a document as I could find and uses the 'Toomevara' spelling as do all local sports clubs.

Even if it's not used locally, whatever spelling is given by the Placenames Database of Ireland/Bunachar Logainmneacha na hÉireann is the official one. That applies to every placename in the 26 Counties. The database was developt by the government's Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht. ~Asarlaí 15:17, 10 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The placenames database is a tool to derive the 'official' Irish Language version of various placenames and uses the Ordnance Survey database as a starting point its is this mapping data that is the origin of the erroneous spelling. There is no constitutional or legal basis for centralised naming of towns or villages in Ireland and I believe that the local authority spelling as the competent legal body in the area in conjunction with local usage has precedence. --Gramscis cousinTalkStalk 12:34, 31 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
