last paragraph of Tiger Proofing is just silly

IT is one thing that back then, ignorant people were claiming that courses were lengthening the course to take advantage away from longer hitters like Tiger...but it s another thing for Wikipedia to still be furthering that ignorance in 2015. IT is 100% OPPOSITE of facts. Obviously so. A longer hitter has a MUCH bigger advantage on a longer course. Because they can still reach par 5s in 2, and then can still hit approach shots with shorter, more accurate irons while their shorter hitting opponents have to use long irons. Hitting a 7 iron to the green while your opponents are hitting a 4 iron is a MUCH bigger advantage than hitting a 4 iron while your opponents are hitting a 2 iron.My god...THINK about it! If you could jump higher than most people, wouldn't you want a volleyball net to be higher?

Inconsistency in style noted

Please, regular editors, do a search for "Tiger" in this text. In most cases, it is properly appearing, but in a few cases it is used in a familiar reference to the article's title subject. Please review this, and—while leaving appropriate cases, like quotes, brand references, etc.—remove the times when we come across like sports reporters, and refer to the article subject too familiarly as "Tiger" rather than the standard encyclopedic "Woods" or full name. Edits of this date

In being asked by a reader why potentially inflammatory sentences regarding Woods infidelities were not sourced in the Professional career section, I edited:

  • to move up three references already later appearing, to cover the three sentences about the matter as it was summarized (to make compliance to WP:VERIFY in this good article all the clearer),
  • and at the same time, noted that two sources were mentioned in the text, both tabloid, but neither source was explicitly given in the inline citations (and so I tagged conservatively, calling for these two).

After identifying that the US Weekly mention was in fact to Us Weekly, I located and placed that reference, slightly correcting time sequence in text to the source (alleged affair was reported on 1 December, tapes disclosed on 2 December). The National Enquirer reference that is referred to in-text could not be located; one is evident on the 28th, but not on the 25th. While these two are primary sources, they were critical, historically, in the evolution of this media case, and their importance is stated in secondary sources (Reuters, AP reported by Fox), and so providing the citations is important, encyclopedically, if the names of those publications are to remain a part of the encyclopedia article text. (Had Us Weekly and National Enquirer not been mentioned in the text, there would be no need—or call from me—for those to appear as references. But as long as they are mentioned, they should appear.)

Finally, I removed the adjectival modifier "tabloid weekly" from before Natl Enquirer, because (i) it already appears at the provided wikilink, (ii) providing it for this one source is inconsistent in style and general presentation (no descriptive modifiers for Us Weekly, The Washington Post, Fox News, ESPN, etc. mentions), and (iii) it could be perceived as editorial, which is always unnecessary.

In the "Personal Life" section under "Infidelity scandal and fallout", please mention: Tiger Woods was assaulted with a golf club by Elin Nordegren, when Elin discovered text messages between Tiger & Rachel Uchitel. Tiger tried to flee from the assault but crashed his Escalade vehicle into a fire hydrant. The injuries sustained by Tiger from Elin's assault included nearly losing two teeth, his right cheek bone compressed. Resulted in Tiger having to undergo plastic surgery for the injuries and hospital treatment and miss his own golf tournament. Tiger refused to lay any criminal charges against Elin.

  •  Not done There is a sourcing issue here. Numerous media sources claimed this, but Elin Nordegren denied it, saying "The speculation that I would have used a golf club to hit him is just truly ridiculous."[1] Even The Sun hedges its bets on this by using the weasel wording "it was claimed yesterday" (ie we don't know for sure and don't want to get sued for libel).[2] The Daily Mail article mentioned above also hedges its bets and casts doubt on whether it actually happened. It was Furman Bisher who claimed this in his blog and other media sources reported it. Bisher was a respected sports journalist, but there was a lack of independent confirmation for the claim, which cited an unnamed source. Woods' agent Mark Steinberg told The Sun that Bisher’s claims were "patently false". Lead paragraph regarding his financial prowess?

I don't think earnings or "He has been one of the highest-paid athletes in the world for several years" should be leading the Tiger Woods article, as it's not the main story of his career. My suspicions are that this is a "paid for" article and it is meant to read more like a CV in a sports marketing firm than an entry in an "encyclopedia". Photo caption

Currently a photo of Woods firing a handgun is captioned: "Woods shoots a handgun during training at a shooting range outside San Diego." I would suggest that unless he is employed in some capacity by an employer that paid for the 'training', the caption should say "Woods shoots a handgun during lessons at a shooting range..." If he's paying for it himself, and not being paid to use the firearm professionally (i.e. military, law enforcement, security, etc.) nor competing (i.e. biathlon) then he's not being 'trained' for anything. 198.161.4.63 (talk) 21:08, 29 May 2017 (UTC)

Legal name Eldrick Tiger Woods?

TMZ has the Jupiter, Florida DUI police report and in it, several times lists his name as "Eldrick Tiger Woods" which also includes a scanned copy of his driver's license stating the same (see: [4]). I have noticed on his personal details it lists his height as 6ft 1 185cm, with a reference to the USPGA. I have read various interviews online where Woods has stated he is 6ft . For Example In the NY Times, in 2009 he said, "If you look at it, guys are getting bigger and stronger. People forget that. When Jack and Gary and Arnold played, and Hogan, they're all about 5-9. I'm 6 foot and I'm the shortest guy in the top players of the world", and he has said that height back in the same paper in 2001, "I'm a 6-foot guy chasing a little white ball.".He has consistently during his career said 6ft as his height: "Here I am six foot, and I'm considered short at six foot. Most of the guys now are 6'3", 6'2", 6'4" Just like every other sport, it's evolved". He has won all 14 majors that he has had a share of the lead going into the final round.  Not done: The new row for 2019 in the Results timeline section of Tiger Woods#Major championships is because of the new order of the majors from 2019 (the PGA Championship being 2nd not 4th). This was discussed here: Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Golf/Archive_6#Results_in_major_championships_section where it was agreed to follow this approach. In the "Personal Life" section, in the subheading "2017 Arrest" the article reads, "On May 29, 2017, Woods was arrested near his Jupiter Island, Florida, home by the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office at about 3:00 am. EDT for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs." This is factually incorrect, as Woods was arrested by Officer Christopher Fandry (Badge #1182) of the Jupiter Police Department, under their agency offense report case number of 17-002626. World Golf Championships section

Can we delete the "World Golf Championships" section (wins + results timeline) ? The contents are duplicated in List of career achievements by Tiger Woods#World Golf Championships. Guinness Book of Records

The citation for the 17 records that Woods is said to have recorded in the Guinness Book of Records is simply a log-in page for that website. Split with Butch Harmon

Suggest that the split with Butch Harmon be dated at August, 2002. There are many references to this date, such as

There were apparently some phone conversations between the two men after the split, but in terms of working together on the practice tee there was very little after August 2002.

The story line of Tiger's swing coaches and swing changes is one of the most important parts of Tiger's career. The current article says Tiger and Butch worked together until 2004. After the August 2002 split, Tiger in 2003 and 2004 won zero majors and "only" 6 tournaments, including only 1 tournament in 2004. Tiger hired Hank Haney in 2004, and had some excellent years after that.

The way the article is written now with the 2004 end date for Tiger-Butch, a reader could conclude that Tiger split with Butch because he was frustrated with his record in 03 and 04, when actually he split with Butch after a great 2002, with 5 tournament wins including 2 majors.

One of the great mysteries of Tiger's career is why would he split with his swing coach at the height of success? Here is a very good article in case the editors of this page want to go further. This article attributes Tiger's desire to change his swing to the discovery of damage to his ACL during minor knee surgery in 2002:

Tiger Woods sued for wrongful death

A contribution suggestion on the topic of Tiger Woods being sued by the family of a young man who worked in his restaurant for wrongful death after the man was killed in a single-car wreck in Martin County, FL, after drinking heavily for three hours after his shift had ended.

On December 10th, 2018, a 24-year old man Nicholas Immesberger was killed in a single-car wreck in Martin County, FL. [1]. Immesberger was a bartender at Tiger Woods' flagship restaurant, The Woods, located in Jupiter, FL. On Tuesday, May 14th, 2019, the parents of Nicholas Immesberger filed a wrongful death lawsuit in Palm Beach County against Tiger Woods, girlfriend and restaurant manager Erica Herman, and The Woods restaurant for negligence. [2] The lawyers who filed the lawsuit, Craig M. Goldenfarb and Spencer T. Kuvin in West Palm Beach, held a press conference to announce the lawsuit, which claims that under Florida's Dram Shop law, the Defendants had a duty to not over-serve Immesberger, because they had personal knowledge that Immesberger struggled with alcohol addiction. [3] In the press conference, the lawyers content that on many occasions, the managers at The Woods would allow Immesberger to sit for hours on end getting drunk at the bar following his daytime shifts, and on days that he was not working. They cite several facts that tie both Tiger and Erica to Nick personally, including the fact that Erica had personally recruited Nick to work at the bar, and the fact that Tiger and Erica had been drinking with Immesberger at the bar, having witnessed Immesberger become extremely intoxicated, just a few nights before he died. There was also a claim that videotape footage of Immesberger drinking at the bar on the day he died had been deliberately deleted by an unknown employee of the restaurant. On the day he died, Immesberger had a blood alcohol content of .256, more than three times the legal limit[4], after reportedly drinking at The Woods bar for three hours past his work shift, all according to the press conference.

Later that same day, Tiger addressed the media regarding the lawsuit against him by saying (quote): "We're all very sad that Nick (Immesberger) passed away. It was a terrible night, a terrible ending, and just...we feel bad for him and his entire family. It's very sad." [5] The quote indicates that indeed, Tiger knew Immesberger personally.

Only Golfer To Win Four Consecutive Majors?

If Tiger Woods is the only golfer to win four consecutive majors, how does that reconcile with Bobby Jones being the only golfer to win a Grand Slam https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Slam_(golf)? Isn't that by definition four consecutive major wins since he won all four in a single year?

  • The difference is that Bobby Jones' Grand Slam didn't consist of the same tournaments as the current definition of a Grand Slam. In 1930, Jones was considered to have won a Grand Slam by virtue of winning the U.S. Open, the U.S. Amateur, the British Open, and the British Amateur, which he did win in the same year. The Masters didn't exist yet (because Jones himself didn't start it until 1934), and the PGA Championship was not as significant then. The modern definition of the Grand Slam -- the Masters, the U.S. Open, the British Open, and the PGA Championship -- didn't become accepted until 1960 or so. Jones did have four consecutive major wins, but not based on what are currently considered the major tournaments. "Coaches and Swing Changes" Section?

I think it would be interesting to have a "Coaches and Swing Changes" section. This has been a major theme in Tiger's career and is lightly covered in the article. I'm volunteering to chip away at it, it would be a fair amount of work to do it properly with all the right refs. Obviously don't want to do the work if there are objections or I can't edit the article because it's in a protected state.

There is a lot of material in the Haney book that would even apply to the Butch years. After Haney it will be harder but many notables commented on the swing changes up to the present.

Tiger proofing

It never is good when a Wikipedia article is so ignorant like this. Lengthening courses does not remove the advantage from long hitters. Quite obviously so, it givens them MORE of an advantage. Just common sense that a course that plays to your strength will be better for you. And obviously, a course where the shorter hitters are hitting a 6 iron on their second shot while the longer hitters hit 8 iron is better for them than a longer course where they are hitting a 3 iron to their opponents 6 iron. MUCH bigger difference in accuracy/control between a 3 and 6 iron and a 6 and 8 iron. The term "Tiger proofing" was made up by race baiters out of sheer ignorance. Courses desperately WANTED Tiger to play their tournaments. Since it obviously meant more fans and more money. And since Tiger always played a very reduced schedule, basically playing the majors, the Players and WGCs and then whatever tournament were sponsored by companies he had deals with, tournaments bent over backwards to make their course MORE enticing to Tiger. And THAT is why they lengthened their courses. To make it BETTER for Tiger. Sources come from Earl Woods wikipedia page and the fact that his mother was of African and European ancestry, indicating Earl Woods is likely 3/4 African American (1/2 from his father and 1/4 from his mother) meaning Tiger is 3/8 African American. Having so many fractions is confusing, so I have suggested the wording above. Noting the Chinese and Native American ancestry through Earl Woods is so far undocumented.

The sources available suggest Kultida Woods is 1/2 Thai, 1/4 Chinese, 1/4 Caucasian (Dutch). This confirms Tiger Woods is 1/4 Thai, 1/4 Caucasian (1/4 Kultida and 1/4 Earl), but given Earl's Chinese ancestry is undetermined Tiger's is undetermined (minimum 1/8 through Kultida).
