Description[edit]
It says, "the Ark of the Covenant, opened to show the Twelve Tables..." The link takes one to the article regarding the Twelve Tables, which have to do with the founding of the Roman Republic. Perhaps the artist really did have the Twelve Tables in mind, and the author of this article has knowledge of it, but I think it is far more likely that the two tables shown are the Ten Commandments.Jim P.
