Notes[edit]

Tenente Portela is home to the Terra Indígena Guarita (Guarita Indigenous Land), a Kaingang Indian reservation. The Kaingang original land covered a considerable portion of southern Brazil, generally speaking they occupied the Araucária Araucaria angustifolia forests (Kaingang: kaa = forest + ingang = dweller). Today there are an estimated 28.000 people who identify as members of Kaingang living in different reservations in southern Brazil, including the Terra Indígena Guarita reservation in Tenente Portela, according to data collected by FUNASA/2006 (Fundação Nacional da Saúde with Brazil's Ministry of Health). Both the ancestral Kaingang language and Portuguese, the national language, are spoken by the Kaingang People. This is the largest native language speaking group in Brazil; the population is experiencing growth. Kaingang communities traditionally are divided in two parts or halves; a person can only marry someone from the opposite half, and all offspring get the fathers mark, belonging to his half. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bepp (talkcontribs) 08:19, 16 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
