Why do we have to tolerate the OS's mangling of Gaidhlig names? Just because they had an inability to handle that language doesn't mean that it should be the case in the modern world. Some of these names make absolutely no sense with English spellings. --MacRusgail 19:06, 30 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I sympathise, but I can't consent to using Gaelic spellings. Perhaps the blame for any transmogrificiation lies with the OS, but language is surely a fluid rather than a static phenomenon. The sources quoted by the article all use the common English spelling and we should follow. We defer to the elder language of the gaels in noting the spelling in that tongue, but we can't use it as an alternate throughout on the English Wikipedia. 'Tanera' may jar in Gaelic, but it makes just as much 'sense' in English as 'Tannara'. In any case, as I know to my cost, even when the modern Gaelic name is known, the meaning and original spelling is sometimes lost. (See for example Talk:Dubh Artach).
