Population decline?[edit]

What is the reason for the apparent population decline? Is it just skewed statistics due to the different adminstrative bodies performing the survey? Or is there some reason people are leaving in droves? JERRY talk contribs 21:40, 11 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

"People leaving in droves" is the correct guess. People were indeed moving out of Magadan Oblast en masse after the dissolution of the Soviet Union; mostly for economic reasons. As a matter of fact, the population of the whole oblast went down from 542,868 inhabitants in 1989 to just 182,726 in 2002. Today it is probably even lower than that.—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 18:16, 12 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Do you know of any sources so we can add this information to the article? I am sure this is an encyclopedic detail that any reader would enjoy knowing. Thanks, JERRY talk contribs 01:19, 13 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I, unfortunately, do not have any sources for this particular district (apart from the hard numbers, which can easily be referenced by the Census data), but I could look up something on the overall decline of population in the Russian Far East in general and in Magadan Oblast in particular. Whatever I'll find is most likely going to be in Russian and will probably not be suitable for this article (since it is about a very specific area). By the way, may I ask you what your interest in this particular district is? Just curious... Best,—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 14:00, 13 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I have always been fascinated with the culture and politics of Russia (and former USSR). In fact, I recently bought some of those nesting dolls and some Russian 'black chocolate' (at great expense). I wish to someday visit Russia on vacation, so I do some research from time to time. I am especially interested in seeing the "real Russia", not just the touristy areas. When I saw the population decline I wondered what it was all about. I think the article should explain such a drastic shift and not just show the numbers. I think a sourced explanation of the decline in the larger region would suffice, and I don't think it would be a problem if the source was in Russian language, as long as the contributor was aware of the English translation of the document, and cited it properly, so that another editor who questions the veracity of the statement could verify it, although perhaps not easily, as they would have to utilize a translatation service. Magadan Oblast would be a great non-touristy place to visit. Never been there myself, but as a former resident of the Russian Far East I can assure that it would be quite an experience for a Westerner like yourself :)
Anyway, I'll try to dig up something interesting on the population decline, although I'm still not sure what the best way to cite that information here would be. Meanwhile, if you happen to stumble upon anything useful in English, that'd be great, too. Cheers,—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 18:45, 13 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I found an external source and an internal wikipedia article that also provides backgound information on this. I added it to the article, please tell me what you think. Thanks. JERRY talk contribs 19:48, 13 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
That works well, except that Wikipedia articles are not accepted as references. I modified the internal link accordingly. Thanks for taking time to work on this!—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 19:53, 13 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Excellent. I like the piped wikilink.... Thanks for your help. JERRY talk contribs 20:42, 13 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

==Assessment rationale==

Quality=Stub was already assessed by others, most likely due to the need to expand context and include cultural, geographical, architectural and political context.

Importance=Low: I assigned this rating due to the article is subordinate to the region under article Magadan Oblast. I would like to see this article improved by subject matter experts, however. JERRY talk contribs 21:28, 13 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

==Suggestions for improvement==

  • Photographs
  • Maps
  • Historical Timeline(s)
  • Points of interest
  • production numbers for mining industry
