I may be able to find some more information soon. However I will propose a correction. When visiting in about 1967, before the rise of terrorism, the staff were quite happy to show us (3 teenagers on bikes) around when we knocked on the door. And we were allowed to go up and have a close look at the masts. I distinctly remember being told that the mast was 670 feet, which would be 200 metres. But it needs confirmation so I will not do an edit now.
And, there was a plain Decca station there first, with 3 tubular masts with T tops and an array of wires strung between them to provide top capacitance, with the big mast, visible in the distance from my bedroom window, going up some time around 1957 to 1962. The only other installation on site was the police repeater on 83.1MHz uplink, 98.3MHz downlink, which used one of the Decca masts to mount its transmit and receive dipoles, with a small and rather scruffy lightweight tubular mast as backup.
The control room has an HF transceiver to keep in daily contact with the other stations in the chain, and vertical wires on the side facing the road to receive the signal from the master station (Kidscale).

- I have had a look, and haven't found much more than the self-published site we already give.[1]
- Another self-published site gives 700 feet, and a 10kW transmitter.[2]
- We need at least one reliable source, and Environment Scotland confirms that there was a Decca transmitter here.[3]
- The difference in height might be the height of the radiator (the actual antenna) versus the height of the mast.
- There is a DAB transmitter on the site, based on this Ofcom document. I have added a link to Switch Scotland.
- There is an underwhelming photo at c:File:Mast on Earl's Hill - geograph.org.uk - 101660.jpg. At least it shows the landscape.
