The name of the article assumes that Navarre is part of the Basque Country[edit]

The article is called "Names of the Basque Country" but then it mentions names that not only include the Basque Provinces, but also Navarre, hence assuming that it is actually part of the Basque Country, which is a disputed theory (many argue that southern Navarre is not Basque at all). How about renaming it "Names of the Basque Country and Navarre (in Spanish)"?--Raderich (talk) 00:18, 30 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

hello Raderich. when writing this article I made no assumption that Navarre is part of the Basque Country (just like I made no assumption that chunks of Uruguay or Argentina are part of the Basque Country when referred as Euskalerria). It is rather that some of the designations referred are based on such assumption(s). I appreciate that the title of the entry might be clumsy. It might mislead the reader that "Basque Country" here stands for the current autonomous community within Spain. In fact, "Basque Country" in the title stands rather for "Basque territory", "Basque land", "Basque area" or "Basque country". Perhaps change to one of these would be better, --Dd1495 (talk) 20:05, 10 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
For what I can see, the title is very appropriate as it is now from a historical perspective and in step with the present-day usage of the name in the English WP. The other refers to the administrative dimension of the term, a reductive synecdoche, synonym to Basque Autonomous Community.
At any rate, it does not actually make any assumption as to its extent. The article dwells on the naming for the territory where the Basque people have lived, historically. Iñaki LL (talk) 21:06, 14 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • Move to Names of the Basque Country instead. Why complicate this? Besides, if someone wants to add French terms to the article as well (see French Basque Country), that would certainly be relevant and a good addition. SnowFire (talk) 21:11, 9 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • "Spanish names of the Basque Country" sounds somewhat ambiguous to me; I am fine with the status quo or the same phrasing without brackets. I should be fine with SnowFire's proposal above if the article revolved around all languages, but the article dwells at the moment on the names of the Basque Country in Spanish. • It'd be pretty trivial to stick a stub-section in for French / other languages and invite editors to expand it. I'm sure it wouldn't stay Spanish-only for long if this was done. (This has come up elsewhere when there's an article that's, say, exclusively United States centric on a topic that isn't really US-specific - rather than move it to "XYZ in the United States", just slap a globalize tag and add in a section for other countries, when appropriate.) SnowFire (talk) 15:54, 14 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support a move. I'm quite happy with the original proposal, but what we most need to avoid is leaving it at the current bad name because we can't agree on the best alternative. Let us not make perfect the enemy of good. Andrewa (talk) 18:02, 14 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support as proposed. As long as the article is solely about Spanish names, per WP:PRECISE, this should be clear from the title. "Spanish names of the Basque Country" does not strike me as ambiguous and is concise. Lennart97 (talk) 11:42, 21 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
