Palaeoanthropology[edit]

My (fallible) memory tells me that this district (? the article doesn't define it's administrative terms, or link to their definitions) got a mention in a book I read recently on recent work in palaeoanthropology (the study of ancient humans, their fossils and their environments)
Indeed, my memory has proven fallible, bcause I've only just realised that "Gondar" is a term for an administrative unit in Ethiopian, or for a direction of the compass, or something that is an element of place names, but not a name in itself. Or is it? Definitely unclear.
This needs someone who understands Ethiopian geographic/ administrative terminology to re-work it so that people without that expertise can understand it. What is a Debub, a Wollo, or a Semian? "Addis" appears to approximate to "town", but that's probably a very crude interpretation.
And it's still possible that this region is of palaeoanthropological interest, but I'd have to go back and re-read the book to find out, which is going to take a while. Aidan Karley (talk) 11:57, 24 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I don't understand your objections. The very first sentence defines Debub Gondar as a Zone, which is an intermediate subnational unit between a region (or kilil) & a woreda. "Debub" is likewise glossed in the same initial sentence as meaning "south". Gondar is nowhere implied to be "a term for an administrative unit in Ethiopian", but is the name of a historic city in Ethiopia. "Wollo" is part of the name of two other Zones, & "Addis" is part of the name of a town -- Addis Zemen. (Hint: most of this is explained if you click on the link to the article.)

While I'll admit that the term "Zone" in this article could be better explained -- clear & succinct writing is always the ideal -- your questions suggest that you have a notable difficulty in understanding the meaning of words from their context.
