Ouru "Owl" Todoroki[edit]

Okay, to clear up this whole owl business, Anime News Network refers to the anime director as "Owl Todoroki". This seems to originate from their twitter account, @todorokiowl. If we try to interpret おうる as a name, it's not. Dictionaries only show Oulu, a place in Finland, as a match. If we look at owl, the dictionary katakana transliteration seems to be アウル, which isn't really that far from オウル. In fact, this transliteration can be backed up by two other unrelated Twitter accounts with usernames of おうる: @laurel_owl @yosuke_owl. It's also the name of two Japanese restaurants: https://r.gnavi.co.jp/p672800/ https://www.hotpepper.jp/strJ000634438/. An "English school" also says that Japanese speakers pronouncing the "ow" in "owl" as オウ is a common mistake.

Now that it's established that おうる is basically a Japanese phonetic rendering of "owl", we can see why ANN chose to just use the English term and it's not exactly wrong per se. As for whether we should do the same, that's up for debate. Opencooper (talk) 07:01, 22 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
