Earliest settlement

"The earliest settlement of the town dates back to Minoan times; excavations have unearthed remnants of settlements as early as 1050 BC." ... isn't 1050BCE after Minoan times by a few hundred years? The usual estimates I see end Minoan rule between 1450-1200BCE. Were Minoan objects found at the settlements?

Oops, this is apparently a mistake I introduced when I expanded the article a couple of months ago. The Sitia museum seems to house several artefacts from Minoan times [1], so the city was presumably already inhabited in these days. I cannot find a reliable source for the city's presumed age at the moment (I'm at work and thus restricted to a rather casual web search at the moment, but I'll have a look at a couple of books as soon as I get home...) -- Ferkelparade π 14:16, 17 January 2006 (UTC)

Thanks! I have listed in my notes that R.E. Willetts' book The Civilization of Ancient Crete mentions Sitia as a Minoan farmstead, so if I get my hands on his book in the future, I'll see if more information is available -- User:Damate 31 January 2006

I removed the Turkish name of the town (Lasid), because it seemed redundant and was a possible violation of the 'no undue weight policy'. It could be argued that a Turkish name would be useful if the town had been built by the Ottomans, or if a substantial number of Turks lived there at present. Had that been the case, the Turkish name would be helpful for students of history or visitors respectively. However, much of Sitia's history seems tied to the Greeks and Venetians, rather than the Turks. Also, there is sizable community of residents from France, the UK and Germany living in Sitia, but there are no Turks -to my knowledge at least. IMO, we would either have to add the town's name in all these languages (which is probably cumbersome), or just live the most common ones i.e. English & Greek. That said, I wouldn't be against adding a link to the Turkish WP article about Siteia - if indeed such a beast exists. 85.75.104.95 20:22, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

Why would the Venetians destroy they own city?

2. The image of Vai beach and Richtis Gorge are unrelated to Sitia (they are not in Sitia) so I removed them along with their related links. ICE77 (talk) 04:44, 27 October 2017 (UTC)
