Charles certainly came to see the siege, but it is stretching a point to say that he participated. He was only thirteen years old at the time.

According to Frank McLynn's work on the Prince, he spent a day in the trenches and came under heavy fire at one stage and was shown to be "calm under fire". Charles wanted to participate more in battle, wanting to be among the very front line artillery troops. Due to the political and propaganda sensitivities of upstaging the Spanish Prince (who had not been seen on the front lines) Charlie was delayed from doing so. The end of the seige brought the problem to an end as Charles followers would of been unable to stop the bold Charles from doing what he wanted.
