Nippon Kaigi[edit]

"Affiliated to the openly revisionist lobby Nippon Kaigi, which advocates a restoration of monarchy in the archipelago, Kihara was among the 225 MPs joining the 'one million people rally to protect the Imperial tradition' in March 2006."

1. What does it mean to be "affiliated" to a lobbying group in this case? Is he a member of the organization or lobbied by it? There's a member's council in parliament. Is he on it? (He is.)

2A. What does it mean to be revisionist? The link leads to "historical revisionism", but the Wikipedia page for Nippon Kaigi describes "constitutional revisionism". In this case, members primarily advocate revision to allow Japan to have a standing military. There's a weaker, secondary advocation for traditional causes: the Shinto religion, and Japanese nobility. But the Japanese Diet (even Nippon Kaigi members) seem to be strongly for separation of church and state and against expanding the Japanese royal family to include extended family.

2B. The Japanese Wikipedia page for Kihara indicates he agrees with the Murayama and Kono statements - Japan's foremost statements on WW2 history - which are not considered "revisionist".

3. The context of the rally doesn't match the implication that Kihara advocates for a more powerful monarchy. Japan has had a ceremonial monarchy since the US occupation in the 1940s. The rally was to support the possibility of a female monarch in that role. The rally was in 2005. It's 2023 now.

This is a famous politician with a long history. His Japanese Wikipedia page is quite long and well-sourced (82 sources at the moment). He's currently acting Secretary General of the LDP. All of his planks are on the record.

He's a former model / juvenile delinquent. He studied in London. He was there for the Dhaka terrorist attack in Bangladesh. He received the Order of the Polar Star in Mongolia.

It seems strange to me, maybe even agenda-driven, to focus 20% of this Wikipedia article on the above bit about the lobby group Nippon Kaigi. 2400:4053:4620:4B00:F968:FB08:8571:48A0 (talk) 10:00, 8 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
