Can we please stop this nonsense of Seán Ó hEinirí being the 'last monolingual Irish speaker' ...[edit]

For some reason people like to throw this claim around despite there being nothing to back this up. He was of course monolingual since he had no English, there is nobody doubting this. However, nowhere in any folklore collection or any contemporary does it ever say he was the last one. Not only is this baseless, there were monolingual speakers alive after Ó hEinirí and there are older people today who have very limited English.

If anyone can provide any sort of source that he was 'the last' then fine, until then I will keep deleting the misinformation. 109.255.24.111 (talk) 22:06, 3 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

A lot of sources, claim that there are very young children in the Gaeltacht who are Irish monolinguals. However some people respond with,"it doesn't count" JayBirdtyper (talk) 00:42, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I have once again had to delete this. They tried to source it with a short obituary written by Séamas Ó Catháin, but I can't help but wonder if whoever used that citation had ever read it for not once does it mention him being one of the last monolinguals. He's certainly one of the last great storytellers, but this monolingual nonsense, spread by a YouTube clip of the "In Search of the Trojan War" documentary (which makes no such claim) has gone on too far. There are certainly older people today who'd need translators to do anything but the most basic stuff through English; I've met a few. Sionnachnaréaltaí (talk) 17:44, 11 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
