Hello, I was wondering if anyone from the 1960's remembers a hermit who lived for a brief time at Sandy Point Reservation, at the southern most tip of Plum Island, on Ipswich property? I remember my dad making comments about him and I was wondering what ever became of him. History has it that there were 2 hermits of the same time period. One was a Lew Kilburn who chose to live his life alone in his house where he grew up on the island, he is not the person I am seeking info on. The 2nd hermit I believe his name was Jacob Helfant who ship/raft wrecked onto the island in c. 1962 during a storm. Made a hut out of drift wood. Was he evicted from the island or did he die there? Thank you for your time. Cheryl

Cheryl, to be perfectly honest with you this sounds like a fish story. Wrecked on the island? Give me a break, what do you think this is, 1856? All the property on the island is patrolled regularly by rangers and police. There are no houses on it except for the very nice house on Stage Island and maintenance structures of the National Refuge. Oh yes, the outhouses. You cannot live there in a hut of any sort in the winter. Chill factor is well below zero. You would soon die of hypothermia just like all the others. There is no access to any stores or services of any kind. There is no food on the island. I do not know why you have chosen to tell us this bedtime story but the public should know of its impossibility. I suppose you are poking fun at Lew and Jacob. When the economy is bad around here there are plenty of persons in the streets - God forbid it ever happens to you - but like the other animals in the wilderness they hang around the settled areas looking for a warm place and a windfall. The truth is, and I hope you never have to find this out, the homeless do not live very long. But cheer up, the police will take you to any homeless shelter and there are certainly plenty of those. But, I will not lie to you, the death rate of the homeless in winter is spectacularly high. Have some respect, not everyone is as fortunate as you.Dave (talk) 02:37, 1 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
