Controversy of second book[edit]

Mann's work has stimulated controversy beginning with her second published collection, At Twelve: Portraits of Young Women (1988).

What exactly was the controversy over this book? Was it a perceived sexualized portrayal of some of the girls?

I don't know specifically what this controversy was, but I would imagine that some people would have seen it as sexualizing the girls. What it is is that these photos show a side of twelve year old girls that is disturbing for some. People want to think of their 12 year old daughters as still being princesses and it just isn't the way it is. If you look at the pictures in that light, it could be controversial. Someone should run down some old reviews to find out if there was any real controversy. I would wager that the 'controversy' arose only after the release of "Immediate Family". nut-meg (talk) 00:24, 17 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
To critics, these portraits "captured the confusing emotions and developing sexual identities of girls at that transitional age, one foot in childhood and one foot in the adult world."...

What kind of critic does this refer too? Do we mean art critics or those who view some of her photos as being child porn? Also, exactly who stated the quoted text? You can't attribute a specific critics opinion to critics in general unless you can cite other critics who also stated similar views. --Cab88 14:57, 21 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It doesn't matter what kind of critic said it as long as it was published. The quote definitely needs to be cited though. nut-meg (talk) 00:24, 17 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Up to now, I have found these quotes, more or less, in this blog, starting from at least December 2000. The first version of the WP article (March 2004) seems also to be a copy (in part) of this blog. Of course this blog text may also be based or copied from earlier material in other sources. This is, at best, a not (yet) reliable and notable source for the above statement and quote.
But, this makes it clear that a careful review of the present article is needed in order to avoid copyvio and unverifiable statements. -- Crowsnest (talk) 11:36, 24 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Please see recent update (march 2009) that address the issues of the controversy and adds documentation. -- Zipity11 (talk) 10:09, 24 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Virginia[edit]

Man it's confusing how it's both her daughter's name and birthplace... anyway, would it be in line with Wikipedia policy to display this controversial image of the bar-censorship, presuming the Journal released it to the public? Tyciol (talk) 00:46, 3 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Controversy of second book revisited[edit]

In 2009 there was a discussion (above) of Immediate Family that apparently resulted in a section on the controversy that is larger than the entire article on the book itself. The application of summary style would seem to indicate a merging of the content here into the other article. I have started a discussion on the other talk page. WriterArtistDC (talk) 01:44, 6 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Agree. The weight of info is unbalanced in this article and would be better placed in the article on the book. -Lopifalko (talk) 10:53, 6 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Since the two articles have different citation formats, named refs vs inline, I have copied the section to my sandbox for conversion. WriterArtistDC (talk) 15:10, 6 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Reviewing the text here, there are a number of issues to address before doing the merge to the other article:
  • There are five citations from a short documentary film Blood Ties: The Life and Work of Sally Mann which is no longer available that I can find. The director later did a full length documentary, What Remains: The Life and Work of Sally Mann (available on YouTube), the style of which brings into question the use of either film as a reliable source for encyclopedic content.
  • There are a number of instances of content not being supported by the sources cited.
  • There are instances of biased wording.
WriterArtistDC (talk) 04:02, 7 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
This sounds like valuable work you're doing WriterArtistDC. -Lopifalko (talk) 08:52, 7 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • I have started moving content to the other article.WriterArtistDC (talk) 00:13, 8 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The content that remains here is a first attempt at a summary, and I would appreciate comments. All the prior content has been preserved, but much that has been copied to the destination article remains "commented out" while I continue to reorganize. I have also found may new, more recent sources that can be used in the book article. WriterArtistDC (talk) 01:06, 8 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The merge into the book article is complete. WriterArtistDC (talk) 12:42, 8 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
