1978 oil transfer operation[edit]

The main jetty opened in the late 1970s. The first cargo transfer there was in 1978 - but this was not iron ore, but [crude oil].

The Greek-owner VLCC "World Horizon" - about 225,000 [tonnes] [deadweight] - had lost her bulbous bow, whilst sailing round the [Cape of Good Hope], loaded, from the Oil Gulf. She used Saldanha Bay as a port of refuge. Another ship - the 'British Patience', about 249,00 tonnes deadweight, operated by BP - was chartered to take the oil from her on to its destination. The oil transfer took several days, using flexible rubber hoses. Reducing pieces had to be made up ashore, as the 'World Horizon's manifolds were to American standards, the receiving's ship's were metric, and the South African hoses were Imperial.
