Brewed "empirically" ???[edit]

From the article: " “Rochefort 6” is the oldest Rochefort Trappist beer and was brewed empirically until the end of the Second World War." Brewed empirically??? Recipe[edit]

"Each of these beers is brewed to the same recipe, with the only difference being the alcoholic content."

This cannot possibly be true, since they get darker with higher alcohol content, and alcohol, being clear, would make it lighter. They may all use the same ingredients, but the wort is probably siphoned off at different points for the different beers, and hence they do not all use the same recipe. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.16.162.138 (talk) 16:21, 29 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Is it that there are three unchanging recipes, the alcohol content varying from batch to batch based on fluctuating mash and fermentation conditions? If so, I think the wording will benefit from a change. Adamrkob (talk) 23:47, 12 December 2010 (UTC) adamrkob[reply]

Styles[edit]

I know of no person or source (including the brewery's website) that would refer to either Rochefort 8 as a tripel (it being nothing like other tripels--though an argument could possibly be made in terms of it being simply a strength designator... which I would still find problematic, particularly as the brewery doesn't use the dubbel/tripel designations for strength), or Rochefort 10 as a barleywine. These labels would be highly misleading to a number of readers, and I feel they ought to be changed or omitted. I will not do so now, as I don't want to step on anyone's toes or start an aggressive edit war, and moreover, I would like to hear and discuss the rational behind these labels before editing. --MS

Rating Rochefort 10.

Myself and a friend discovered Rochefort 10 a couple of years ago whilst on a 'Trappist Mountain Bike tour of the Ardennes' (well thats what we told the girls) and we too found the 6, 8, 10 V's percentages a little confusing. The reason why we decided to come up with a new 'shit factor' rating....number 10 warrants a SF3, which basically means after drinking it for 3 minutes you start talking complete shit. Number 10 is clearly the king amongst beers and to cut through all fruity, fragrant blah blah noise we feel the taste can be better defined as 'Christmas in a glass' and should definitely not be consumed pre cycling home with small children on board.

At time of publish (30/07/07) it is rumoured that supplies are drying up as the monks have enough cash, a great shame but to be admired in this era of commerciality.

MS - I completely agree with you. These labels are both meaningless (dubbels and tripels are not beer styles) and random. If you have the alcohol percent for each beer, please edit it.
