More info[edit]

Notes to self (or anyone else interested):

  • The article currently needs more about his political career. He was a member of the City Council (Common Council) before mayor. Even before the Great Fire, as mayor he supported a public water system piped in from Cedar River. This idea became much more popular after the fire.
  • The book by Peacock seems to be the source that many other sources cite.
  • Ill health evidently ran in the family; heart disease according to one source. His brother Peter died c. 1902. His brother William was also long ill when the company was sold (died 1909). [1] [2] Robert went to Europe in 1904 to recover. [3]
  • Character. He seemed to prefer life in the countryside. [4] He opposed deer-hunting on Orcas. [5] He remained at least somewhat active in public affairs; a progressive Republican in 1911. [6] [7] [8]
  • More random bits when he sold his business (though hard to read at places): [9]
