meaning[edit]

In A Dictionary of Ulster Place Names, McKay gives "perhaps 'the roaring one' as the meaning (pg 125). This is likely based on O'Rahilly (Early Irish Histoy and Mythology, pg 5) and Pokorny (in Geographie Irlands bei Ptolemaois, ZCP 24 (1954), where he connects it with the Name Cú Rói, older form Cú Raui which he translates as "brüllender Schlachthund" (.i. roaring battle-hound). The connection with Mod. ró "rowing" is not correct at all...that is a modern loan from English (not even in Dinneen) and it is masc. not fem.. The link for the reference to a Viking meaning and red is not working, and both would seem doubtful considering the Old Irish form - Róa (as in Onomasticon Goedelicum).
