DoD image called "propaganda"[edit]

Another contributor in this edit, removed an image with the edit summary: "rm - the prisoner in the image is not Ridah Bin Saleh Al Yazidi the subject of this BLP - no good reason given for the inclusion of this 'propaganda' image."

I am concerned with this edit summary. I would appreciate a meaningful, civil explanation as to how this contributor came to characterize this DoD image as a "propaganda" image.

This image, IMO, is useful in that it illustrates the extraordinary measures the DoD took in response to the Supreme Court's ruling. What the DoD reported is that every captive remaining in Guantanamo had an official come to their cell, individually, in the weeks following the DoD's ruling, and explain the rulings implication for their status.

The DoD didn't publish images of its reading of the notice to every captive. They did publish an image of one captive having the notice being read to them.

There are some wikipedia contributors who regard the nature of the treatment of the captives in Guantanamo, the circumstances through which they ended up in US custody, the nature of their interrogations, and the nature of the review of their status was entirely routine, mundane, completely run of the mill. However, human rights experts, experts in military law, and other informed commentators, all recognize that these aspects of the detentions was extraordinary, unprecedented, and very controversial.

The contributor who removed this image -- without first discussing it here on the talk page, may be one of those contributors who believes the treatment of the captives in routine and mundane, not extraordinary and unprecedented -- in spite of the numerous references to the contrary.

The CSR Tribunals imposed on the DoD by the Supreme Court were remarkable, unprecedented. The notices read to the captives, like this one, were unprecedented. And, IMO, it is appropriate for this image to be placed on the CSR Tribunal section of every article about a captive who did not attend their Tribunal. For the captives who did attend their Tribunal one of the images the DoD made public showing the CSR Tribunal hearing room is more appropriate.

The term "propaganda" is usually used to refer to material intended to manipulate viewers through false information. I am concerned that calling an official DoD image "propaganda" is a distortion of the term "propaganda". Geo Swan (talk) 21:39, 1 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

First of all it is not true that this had not been discussed before. We have and i expressed my strong rejection and ask you for an explanation for the inclusion and you did not continue the discussion there.
As well the TfD discussion of the CSRT template has shown that there is an objection from the wider community to include this picture into every detainee BLP. The image is topic and part of the Combatant Status Review Tribunal.
Thank's for your explanation now. After my first look at it i can already say that i still have a very strong objection for the inclusion of the image into this and many other BLP's and that i think that you are mislead in many of your arguments. Because of the lengths of your post, please give me some days to think about it and to formulate my detailed reply that i will post here. IQinn (talk) 04:26, 2 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
