Storyline[edit]

The one thing that annoys me about this article is the sheer depth in which the storyline is described. I propose a condensed version of the story, detailing the key points, along with the "levels" of the game in the order they are discovered in the game.

I don't think it's necessary to tell the reader:

Eventually Parker makes his way via secret underwater caverns to Capek's undetected research facilities for nanotechnology

Perhaps a more simple approach will suffice:

  • Garbage Processing Facility - Parker encounters an Ultor Personnel Suppression Combot which must be defeated by luring it into the incinerator.
  • Medical Labs - Parker must use a disguise to compromise the heavily guarded laboratories.
  • Capek's Zoo - It is revealed that Capek is using miners as guinea pigs for nanotechnology experiments.
  • Capek's Inner Sanctum - Parker kills Capek.
  • Grand Canyon - It is revealed that Colonel Masako has sent mercenaries to combat the rebellion.
  • Satellite Control Tower - Parker sends an SOS message to the EDF fleet.

etc.

There was a MASSIVE error in the timeline, as it said RF took place in 2075, when in fact it took place in the 2158 (since RF2 occurs 5 years after RF, and the date is 2163 in that game). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.241.98.157 (talk) 19:59, 23 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Any feedback? --Kryters 12:12, 4 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think that the amount of content included in the storyline section is appropriate for an encyclopedia. Perhaps a summary paragraph or section can be added before the main portion of the section.

I hate to be a "Grammar Nazi", but the Plot section needs a rewrite for grammar reasons. It is full of run-on sentences and other grammatical errors, such as the following:

Hendrix tells Parker that the mercenaries have orders to destroy the mining complex, covering up any proof of Ultor's wrongdoing, Hendrix is killed soon after this by the mercenaries.

That's only one of many sentences that needs to be split into two or three sentences. For example:

Hendrix tells Parker that the mercenaries have orders to destroy the mining complex, which would cover up the proof of Ultor's wrongdoing. Hendrix is killed soon afterwards by the mercenaries.

External Links[edit]

I am entirely new to the phenomenon and workings of wikipedia. On two occasions I added a link, to the external links section, to a website which I represent. It was with complete innocence that I undertook this endevour. THQ does not support Red Faction. Volition does not support Red Faction anymore either. There is only one premeire website which does support Red Faction and that is the one which I attempted to link to. Do a google search on Red Faction, wikipedia is prominent along with the web site I represent.

Our website offers, for free, advice, solutions and volumes of documentation covering all aspects of Red Faction: running various Red Faction versions on diverse computer platforms, operating cheat free multiplayer servers, making custom maps for single player scenarios and multiplayer maps using RED Editor and hosting the 1.3 version of Red Faction - a community solution to prevent cheating. We have six years of experience with this game and have never endorsed player cheats. Why shouldn't our site have a link here?

So my attempt to link was refuted and I saw this response:

03:00, 13 May 2007 Yukichigai (Talk | contribs) (13,495 bytes) (Revert. To paraphrase polisy, this is not the place to pimp your goddamn website. Continue to press the matter and the entire domain will be blacklisted from Wikipedia.)

Before I registered here at wikipedia, there was a link in the external links section of the Red Faction article which led directly to a private website run by Red Faction cheaters. I edited that and removed it. They offer downloads which allow these same cheaters to turn multiplayer servers upside down and even crash them. Why did wikipedia allow cheaters to "pimp" their website and then turn around and remove an honourable site link?

As a first time participant of wikipedia I am completely shocked and dismayed that I would receive this kind of gruff and unscholarly treatment.

P.S.: Before wikipedia blacklists the domain, please note, I did not include the website address in question in this discussion topic.

There's possibly been some overreaction because the link was first introduced as a generic link to "levels4you", with no apparent relevance to Red Faction - it's quite common for spammers to promote their gaming site by just pasting "Gamename at Spamgames.com!" into dozens of articles.
However, I'm afraid the redfaction.levels4you.com site unambiguously fails WP:EL - in the "links normally to be avoided" section, Wikipedia excludes both "Links to sites that require [...] registration to view the relevant content." and "Links to [...] discussion forums."
If there used to be a link to a different forum that nobody noticed was breaching WP:EL, but someone noticed your link within a couple of days, then that's just bad luck, it's not a conspiracy to promote one site and reject another. The anecdote in WP:FISHING is worth a read. --McGeddon 11:36, 13 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your quick response McGeddon. On behalf of our website, I apologize for any breech of policy and causing unintentional mischief. I am unfamiliar, but learning, the functions of wikipedia as quickly as I can. I would like to reassure yourself, the staff and all visitors to wikipedia that our website is a completely open and very public website.
To some degree it is a forum, for the reason that if anyone encounters problems with the game that they would be able to ask for help and receive immediate assistance. However, there are many sections which provide documentation on the inner workings of the game that are not examined on any other website which makes us unique. Registration is not required to view the entire content of our website, but it is required to download files or post in the forum, this much is true.
It is my sincerest hope that despite the nature of our website that an exception could be made in this case. Our knowledge base is unrivaled in the intellectual and practical application of Red Faction, built up by thousands of people over the past six years. The key word I infer; "normally" in "links normally to be avoided".
The fundamental reason for my visit and my two attempts to link are purely noble. We want to help anyone who needs help or is curious about the mechanics of Red Faction, because THQ and Volition no longer support it.
Incidently, not too long ago, THQ stopped hosting redfaction.com. Now it is a 404 error which redirects to THQ's main website. A subsequent search of the THQ site for Red Faction yields no results. Intrinsically, the first External Link for this article is a dead link. Red Faction is being erased, I want to constructively preserve it.
Edit: I have reviewed the displayed history of this article; from December 8th, 2005 thru March 28th, 2007 - our website was linked here. Why then and why not now? Hapa Hanu 15:21, 13 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
WP:FISHING.
If there's some encyclopaedically useful and publicly-readable documentation that meets WP:EL, then you're welcome to link to it directly, but if your site is a level archive and user forum, it's not appropriate to link to it. Wikipedia is an encyclopaedia rather than an Internet directory - external links should be to resources which are relevant to a user who is researching Red Faction, rather than a player who wants to download new levels. --McGeddon 10:54, 14 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you again for a response McGeddon. I recognise the fact that the pattern of enforcement and demeanor to which it is enforced changes over time. The fact that for fifteen monthes our link was here at wikipedia and that now, is not acceptable. Obviously, since the link was here before - I imagined it should be here again.
It is unfortunate that the design and coding of our website does not provide for an encyclopaedic layout at this time. Regardless, the resources are there waiting in a manner that if someone has curiousities regarding any element of Red Faction; those questions can be answered, which is our goal, not just to provide new levels.
I am deeply dissappointed by my entire experience here at wikipedia. Even though I have been a member for only three days, I have been vapidly insulted by another member with ruthless impunity and then warned as a spammer - threatened with an edit block over two mundane link attempts.
I am not sure if I want to participate here at all. Thank you for your time and considerations. Hapa Hanu 16:59, 14 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

GeoMod Engine[edit]

I've added in links to a new encyclopedia page called "GeoMod Engine" where appropriate. I do not know anything about this engine though, other than the basics that are already outlined in the Red Faction entry, so someone else is going to have to provide the knowledge about it. -- OranL (talk) 21:53, 27 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Top-Down Shooter[edit]

I don't believe Red Faction is one. 98.215.64.36 (talk) 07:13, 19 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Communism[edit]

Should there be details on the communist overtones of the game? I mean, just look at the cover art. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.9.128.253 (talk) 06:11, 9 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Don't you mean undertones? Anyways, yes, that is appropriate to the storyline, I'll add it soon.

Clean Up[edit]

This page is scattered and loosely formed. The page would better fit an encyclopedic format if it were to be cleaned up.

See Also[edit]

Pointing out that an FPS game that came out after Half-Life is similar to Half-Life adds nothing of value to the article. Yes, it is a linear, narrative-focused game with a series of set-pieces where people tell you what to do. Games before and after also did this. Was it likely inspired in some way by Half-Life? Probably. Is there an evidentiary link between the two that would add appropriate historical context or relevancy to this article?

Alternatively may as well include "See Also: Unreal" or other games that include terrain modification by the player. 38.104.217.130 (talk) 15:39, 27 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
