Prison Farm memories[edit]

In the early 1980s, my family was living in Greencastle, Indiana. For several years, I recall taking the family (wife and 2 young daughters and family dog) to the apple orchard at the Putnamville Prison Farm. The orchard was on the north side of Indiana 40, across from the main prison entrance. We drove along a gravel road past the farm fields to a small parking area near a “roadside” shelter. Apples were available for sale as picked by inmates in bushel, half bushel and such baskets. We would opt to pick our own. We took an empty half bushel basket and an apple picker that they provided and wandered around the orchard. Each row of trees in the orchard had a sign at the end of the row which identified the type of tree. We chose golden delicious, red delicious and macintosh. The collection was weighed at the stand as we returned to our mini van. My wife made apple pies and apple crisp with these selections.

We cherish those days and the happy memories. We are saddened that time and society has ended such events. 65.184.88.32 (talk) 21:16, 19 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
