Merge Proposal

I propose that this article be merged with "Civil service of Ireland". I appreciate that a distinction between "civil service" and "public service" should be made. This, I suggest, could be done clearly in the civil service article. To me it seems pointless to have two separate articles and it makes it less likely that a reader will get the full picture of the civil and public services. Aditionally, the article is really poor. It would be better to improve, I think, the civil service article.

Object -- whilst its often easy to blur the two their is a clear distinction between the "civil service" and "public service", for instance but not limited to: terms and conditions of employment, diversity and type of work undertaken, grade and renumeration of staff, types of organisation worked in, political independence, foundation and history. Change name of Article

Given the opposition to the merger I expect it will not go ahead unless any one else has any supporting views. Instead, it will linger on, no one it seems interested enough to improve it.

Given this, I have made another proposal:

I have proposed that this article be moved to "public service of Ireland". This accords with the name of the state which is "Ireland" not "Republic of Ireland" - (See Names of the Irish state). There is, in my view, no room for confusion with the island of Ireland in this case because islands do not have public services. Public service of the Republic of Ireland → Public service of Ireland — In accordance with "use common name" and "no unnecessary disambig" policies, "Republic of" should be dropped from the article name.   • Comment It seems to me, that when it comes to world governments, people normally say "Ireland" to say Republic of Ireland and say "Northern Ireland" to refer to that. While in many cases I would agree you, public services are very much an administrative matter and does differ on each side of the Irish border. Unfortunately, the terminology is much too politicised to apply common sense. The Celestial City (talk) 23:45, 5 December 2010 (UTC)
