There were in fact plagues during the Roman era. Namely during the Antonine dynasty and later in 251 C.E. Whether these epidemics affected Venice I am not sure. My point being, however, is that were such epidemics during the Empire. --Mikepjersey (talk) 19:01, 4 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

WAY too much emphasis on alleged folklore, and none on its real history[edit]

First of all, the alleged folklore surrounding the alleged ghosts and other paranormal phenomena of the island are anything BUT common knowledge in Venice (which is rather unusual for folklore, wouldn't you say?). A comparison with the Italian article corroborates what I am saying. And in any case, references are needed - and they are not provided.

Secondly, the island is, according to the Italian article, being "recuperated" for use, so it's not exactly "off limits" for the general public.

And of course, there is a rich history - not always gruesome - that is not even mentioned in the English article.

Yes, this article reads like a copy/paste ghost story you'd see on an internet forum. I'm not a skeptic, but I do think this page needs to be re-written. I'm not sure where to start though, especially since it's hard to find reliable sources for the paranormal theories about Poveglia. Worldruler20 (talk) 05:39, 7 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I found some reliable information from a site connected to the Municipality of Venice (now referenced in the article), which was backed by the content of the Italian Wikipedia, which has a consistent bibliography on which that page is built. Besides, one of the external sources referenced in the page already contained most of the information I put together. I have therefore rewritten the page, including the real history of the island, and moving the previous information to a dedicated paragraph titled "Folklore" ~~- which, by the way, still needs citations~~. I'm not a native English speaker, so please have a check at the article and correct any grammatical/syntactical/whatever error you should find. --Luca Bergamasco (talk) 22:39, 14 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I agree: there is nothing about the mess created with the public attempt of selling the Island. Something is really missing here!
