Proposed move[edit]

The airfield described here is Poltava Airbase (sometimes called Kanatove). Poltava Airport, also known as Suprunovka (Russian: Супруновка) or Ivashky (Ивашки) is located at 49°34' N, 34°24' E, which is west of the city. ICAO code 'UKHP' also belongs to Suprunovka. Not sure about the IATA code MIO; IATA PLV seems to be assigned to Suprunovka. See;

The MIO IATA code (IATA: MIO) is assigned to Miami Municipal Airport. So, I removed that code from the Poltava Air Base -- Denis.arnaud (talk) 19:09, 31 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

American tragedy?[edit]

A tragedy is mentioned but not described - no deaths, injuries, damages. What happened?

There were several people killed during the raid, and also while cleaning up the thousands of land mines dropped by the Luftwaffe. 60 B-17 bombers were destroyed just at Poltava, along with all of the base's fuel. It was a set up by Stalin to rip off the Americans for as much as they could get away with, then screw 'em over. It worked, and FDR never listened to anyone that was there and saw how Stalin was a monster. FDR kissed Stalin's ass right into the Cold War. Maybe FDR was the tragedy, I'm sure that will make me lots of friends.Deerlight (talk) 06:43, 2 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I believe that the tragedy is in reference to the fact that Stalin never intended to "play ball" with the Western Allies, except to take as much lend lease, expertise, etc. as he could get. The tragedy is that not only did nobody in the Roosevelt Administration listen to men on the ground at Poltava about the inadequate base defenses (which were proven to be inadequate when the Luftwaffe attacked the base that one night with impunity), but also that Washington DC of that time just did not get what Stalin was up to; that being a lenghty Cold War in an atempt to spread Marxist--Leninist Communism to the rest of the world through wars in Korea and Vietnam, etc. Scslate (talk) 04:56, 26 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Sarah funk u s Army[edit]

Trying to locate Sarah Funk US Army posing as a civilian in the Ukraine making her way to the air base in a private Taxi heading back to the States via transport by US Air Force whereabouts unknown. P-51 in the air raid[edit]

One my book (italian, so of hard-access in UK/US) and at least one INTERNET reference (airforcemag.com) say that on 21.6.1944 Poltava was reached by 130 B-17 and 70 P-51 and that 15-20 of the last were destroyed.
