Founding date[edit]

Philippi must have been founded before 1980, as it is mentioned in a well-known poem by Ingrid Jonker ("Die kind wat dood geskiet is deur soldate by Nyanga" / "The child who was shot dead by soldiers in Nyanga") written in 1960 in response to the Sharpeville massacre and published in her 1963 collection Rook en oker.
