Rail[edit]

Somebody had an entry for an old railway station in Palmerstown. I removed this because it doesn't refer to the Palmerstown in Dublin 20, it's a different place altogether. Name?[edit]

Anybody know why, and when, this unusual name was given to this part of Dublin? What was its name before this? 86.44.43.208 (talk) 02:03, 12 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

– According to SDCC's history page here it comes from a 12th century "Palmer's Hospital". More unusually, seemingly the official name is Palmerston, and has led to various road signs with both spellings. A recent plebiscite to officially change the name to Palmerstown didn't carry because the number who voted fell short of the 60% required. Noelfirl (talk) 14:40, 23 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Need to disambig[edit]

There is a civil parish of the same name called Palmerstown, Fingal. Should this parish be disambiguated to "Palmerstown, South Dublin"? Laurel Lodged (talk) 19:02, 23 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Population[edit]

I edited the population to most recent census data. According to CSO, there are two divisions which both incorporate Palmerstown (Palmerston West, Palmerston Village) and both have been added. Is this fair? Stormy clouds (talk) 15:57, 21 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Spelling not changed in 1863[edit]

I wish to pre-emptively refute this claim:

Traditionally referred to as Palmerstown, the area had, unbeknownst to locals, officially carried the moniker of Palmerston after an ordnance survey of 1863 sought to name it after a British lord of the same title.
Census of Ireland 1841 Report p.356 lists under Uppercross Barony the parish "Palmerston P." containing the town "Palmerston T."

Note that it may still be true that the Ordnance Survey's decision to plump for spelling "Palmerston" was influenced by the received spelling for the title Viscount Palmerston (it was often the case that evidence from local landowners got more weight than evidence from locals of lower status) but the decision must have been taken before Sheet 17 of the first edition six-inch map of Dublin was published on 24 November 1843. jnestorius^(talk) 15:45, 8 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
