Quick explanation of Wikipedia outlines[edit]

"Outline" is short for "hierarchical outline". There are two types of outlines: sentence outlines (like those you made in school to plan a paper), and topic outlines (like the topical synopses that professors hand out at the beginning of a college course). Outlines on Wikipedia are primarily topic outlines that serve 2 main purposes: they provide taxonomical classification of subjects showing what topics belong to a subject and how they are related to each other (via their placement in the tree structure), and as subject-based tables of contents linked to topics in the encyclopedia. The hierarchy is maintained through the use of heading levels and indented bullets. See Wikipedia:Outlines for a more in-depth explanation. The Transhumanist 23:58, 8 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Title and scope[edit]

Currently the scope of this article is clearly New York State. New York City is not even mentioned in the lead (and never has been).

In view of the recent(ish) and highly controversial move of the New York State article away from the base name New York, that seems to me to be contrary to consensus. Outline of New York needs to cover the city too. Alternatively, Outline of New York State or a similarly disambiguated title is more appropriate for the article as it stands.

It's a state outline, part of a series listed in Category:Outlines of U.S. states. In my opinion, this page should move to Outline of New York (state), by analogy with Outline of Washington (state). Certes (talk) 18:40, 23 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
That makes sense to me. Andrewa (talk) 19:29, 23 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with that. It is consistent with the Washington state article and the title of New York (state). Considering all the discussion invloved in moving the state article, I would wait a day or two, but it is definitely a case where moving a daughter article to match a main article is almost automatic. oknazevad (talk) 01:18, 24 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
There's no reason to move it as long as there's no Outline of New York City article. The Washington article is where it is because there's an Outline of Washington, D.C. - Station1 (talk) 05:42, 24 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I'm thinking that there should be a broader Outline of New York article covering the State, the City, the Metropolis... all of those. This isn't possible for Washington State/Washington D.C. because they're different locations. The question is, do we move it, or modify it? Andrewa (talk) 04:07, 9 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
