I copied the impact section to my sandbox, going to see what I can sketch out. Menolly001 (talk) 16:39, 10 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I have made significant changes to the first section outlining and defining OEP which I will post here in the next week, once I've included or edited from the current definitions found here. Richelieu5851 (talk) 20:24, 25 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Updates to Concept Definition[edit]

Just adding to the recent reviews with an additional focus on redefining the conception of OEP with current elements within current research e.g. connections to open pedagogy, open scholarship, OER enabled pedagogy. Using both Cronin (2017) and Paskevicius (2017) as primary sources for defining the term, but also referencing Nascimbeni & Burgos (2016) open educators factory for definitional considerations. Richelieu5851 (talk) 18:47, 3 June 2021 (UTC). A recent review on Openness in Education should also be included which comprehensively covers both OER and OEP within the broader movement of openness in education more generally (Bozkurt et al., 2019[1]) [2](talk)[reply]

My review of this article[edit]

On top of what is said here, my suggestion is to work with up to date literature, there is work from 2017 onwards that has advanced the field of OEP notably, so I suggest including more of that literature. I also suggest adding the social justice angle that has been discussed in the literature of OEP, particularly the work of Hodgkinson-Williams and Trotter (2018) and Lambert (2018). Also, Bali, Cronin and Jhangiani (2020). Framing Open Educational Practices from a Social Justice Perspective. Journal of Interactive Media in Education, (1), p.10. https://jime.open.ac.uk/articles/10.5334/jime.565/ TaoTeChin (talk) 22:31, 22 June 2021 (UTC) This will broaden the scope of the article and also make it relevant to what has been experienced in COVID times regarding access to education.[reply]

agreed, those are exactly the articles I was thinking of! --Menolly001 (talk) 18:26, 3 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
For my dissertation proposal, I'm currently writing about the intersections of OEP and social justice. I will draft a contribution to the article in my sandbox and then perhaps we can discuss more at the upcoming webinar, in Slack, or here on the Talk page. --jmenglund (talk) 19:51, 7 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Essmiller review of this article[edit]

The lead is articulate, but will benefit from inclusion of recent research. Those updates will include non-OER dependant discussions and definitions of OEP. It will also be well to remove reference to transformation of 21st century learners as the article is updated to reflect current research and practice. I wonder though, if it might be useful to have a section which documents this expectation as we track trends and actual practice in the history of educational technology. The article structure is clear, and provides a good place to start. The headings and subheadings point to themes, and there are no purely decorative graphics. The content will have stronger balance as it is updated to reflect current literature and research. It does not take on a biased tone, but does represent a narrow conversational scope than is currently applied to OEP. The article is well sourced but in order to represent OEP in current practice will need updated sourcing and citations. I rate this article Start. --Menolly001 (talk) 15:41, 3 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Notability[edit]

I'm not prepared at this moment to put extensive work into this article, but I plan to in the future. I am pretty confident that the sources exist to justify a separate article according to WP:GNG, but would want to put a little thought and research into it first. If somebody feels the need to move toward deletion in the meantime, I don't have any objection, but in any case I will be trying to return to make a case for a separate article in the coming months.

A few sources I'm aware of offhand. (These would need to be reviewed for WP:RS and in some cases I have a WP:COI.)

Also, a number of academic papers have the term in their titles:

-Pete (talk) 01:34, 16 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I concur. I think this article has merit. Most of the other OER articles do not address actually using OERs. Lots of educators hear about the concept and may have even located some OERs, but have no idea what to do with them. Practice descriptions and references would be greatly appreciated. I plan to spend some time working on this article. Besides it is my assignment for http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WIKISOO/Week_2 --Vtaylor12 (talk) 20:16, 21 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that OEP is justified as a separate article. I have gathered a list of relevant sources which I will add in a new section. I also plan to work on this article for the WikiSOO Q2 final project alongside User:Redwellie14. So, hopefully in a couple of weeks the merge suggestion, along with the need for more sources, can be discussed and removed. C01Clem (talk) 03:06, 10 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

My review of this article[edit]

I am a volunteer at Burns Science and Technology Charter School.

I am reviewing this article according to the instructions at WP:Communicate OER.

I suggest changing the article in the following ways:

  • expanding the article to include additional information about actually using OERs
  • include specific practices with description of application

I think that this article could be improved by adding this statement:

  • use and reuse of open educational resources and other aspects of open practice in education.

This reference supports the above statement:

Another Review[edit]

I teach at Cambridge School of Weston.

I am reviewing this article according to the instructions at WP:Communicate OER.

I suggest changing the article in the following ways: Developing a structure with clear content sections, such as: Open Educational Practices (lead), Definition, Difference from Open Educational Resources, Initiatives (programs), Impact, Notes, and Resources.

I agree. This article would benefit from further sections. I wonder if the difference from OER might be covered in the defintion(s) section? However, creating sections in the first place should allow us to make some initial progress on this article. C01Clem (talk) 02:30, 10 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Considering Initiatives (programs), I think this would allow us a place to gather examples although in time this might become a very long list. Perhaps though, we could take these examples, look for commonalities in their implementation, and then use them as subsections under Forms of Practice? C01Clem (talk) 02:37, 10 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I think that this article could be improved by adding this statement: Open Educational Practices are the use and re-use of Open Educational Resources. This sentence could be the first sentence in the lead section because it clearly states what OEP is and how it differs from OER.

This reference supports the above statement:[3]

I agree that this is a clear statement of the relationship with OER, without getting into the discussion of what OER actually is. Although, I think later on there should be mention of whether OEP relies entirely on OER, and that the two may not be intrinsically linked. C01Clem (talk) 02:47, 10 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Potential OEP References[edit]

I have broken these references into two sections. The first, Closed Access requires membership or fee payment. The larger Open Access section should be reachable by all. Note that the formatting of these references is not consistent or, in some cases, complete.

OEP Definitions[edit]

While looking for relevant OEP references I have come across several definitions which may prove useful for this article.

C01Clem (talk) 03:25, 10 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I combined these to form a lead in summary. Perhaps rather a Definition section we could use a Definitions section that highlights differing opinion and those groups working in this field? Perhaps one for OEP Research Groups, where subsections would include their specific definition might be better? C01Clem (talk) 02:57, 13 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Under scope, should there be a subsection entitled 'the knowledge economy' because I see the idea that OEP is a key element in a knowledge based society & economy in the research? Redwellie14 (talk) 15:45, 18 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I say yes. It might also be worth a mention in the opening paragraph on Scope (which I think needs some work). Perhaps a little on Digital Literacies might tie in here nicely too. There is also the Impact section which is looking a little lost now. However, I think the main thing is to get it down (be bold), then as we see connections we can move or mention that information elsewhere where relevant. - C01Clem (talk) 22:33, 18 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Good work! Be bold![edit]

Hi all, I have looked through the reviews and list of source materials above, and I'm very impressed! I'd like to encourage all of you working on this article to be bold -- which, believe it or not, is a formal editing guideline on Wikipedia :) Please jump right in and start adding the excellent ideas you've been discussing here on the talk page. Don't worry, you won't break the article -- I'm pretty sure you will make it a whole lot better! -Pete (talk) 18:11, 10 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Orphan Status[edit]

Looking at Pages that link to "Open Educational Practices", we could do with another couple of links from other articles back to Open Educational Practices so that we can remove the Orphan tag. (Disambiguation pages i.e. OEP, and this talk page don't count). I am hoping that some of the organisations, case studies and areas of practice will provide a few opportunities. Perhaps it's worth (at least at this early stage) placing potential terms in [[page tags]]? Or, is it better just to search?

C01Clem (talk) 15:28, 13 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I added a link to this page from PhET_Interactive_Simulations in the section "OER Teaching Community" I found that this article helped because it explains practices for teachers to provide and use OER materials that are written by practicing teachers. Thanks for the clarifications that this article provides. I hope it will lose Orphan status. Patricia.Loeblein (talk) 18:53, 14 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Patricia.Loeblein for linking to the article and of course, finding it useful. I have found a few other relevant pages (listed in the See also section), and I am optimistic that we will be able to remove the Orphan status in the near future. :) C01Clem (talk) 00:07, 15 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Good luck. I put this article on my Watchlist.Patricia.Loeblein (talk) 01:09, 15 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I removed the orphan status since there are now 3 links Patricia.Loeblein (talk) 20:32, 16 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. We are also linking out to a lot more articles now and I see at one person is working on an article in their sandbox that will (hopefully) link back too :) - C01Clem (talk) 23:02, 16 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Projects and Resources[edit]

I've been reading through Open Educational Practices and Resources: The OLCOS Roadmap 2012 by Geser. The final section (5) has a list of forty projects and resources that may prove useful here. Either as new sources of material (under Initiatives and Projects?) or for links to relevant articles (and possibly some back to OEP). C01Clem (talk) 12:26, 15 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I removed the projects section because there is a section on initiatives, and to have both would be redundant. Projects and initiatives can both be listed under initiatives, which will be section that provides information on programmes designed to encourage OEP. Redwellie14 (talk) 23:02, 17 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I know we emailed one another but in the spirit of Wikipedia and Pete's advice at the beginning of Wikisoo, I am going to move our discussion to the talk page. In reading and taking notes (in my Sandbox), having two sections with one entitled 'Initiatives' and the other 'Projects' will be misleading because initiatives and projects are used interchangeably in the literature on OER and OEP. I understand the distinction that you would like to maintain between the big projects and the smaller, more local projects. In that spirit, I suggest that we still only have one section entitled Initiatives but have two major subsections: Big Projects and Smaller Projects or National/International Projects and Local Projects. Then populate the two sub-sections accordingly. What do you think? Redwellie14 (talk) 14:49, 18 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I am wondering if perhaps the distinction is between initiatives that promote or help enable OEP and those that projects/case studies that are implementing OEP? For example OPAL, OLCOS and SCORE versus, OpenLearn and Open Michigan? Perhaps the distinction will manifest more clearly once the examples are there? Or, others will arrive and join the discussion. - C01Clem (talk) 22:50, 18 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
That is a great distinction that, I agree with you, should be maintained. Okay, so we will have two sections that are entitled: Initiatives that use or promote OEP and Initiatives that implement OEP. Redwellie14 (talk) 00:38, 19 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Images for OEP[edit]

I feel that it would be nice to have a few relevant images in the article. So far, every image I'd like to use has at a minimum come under a non-commercial Creative Commons license. Just a heads up in case anyone notices they are looking at more completely open source material. Or I guess likes the idea of making their own graphics? C01Clem (talk) 12:35, 15 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Well, that's frustrating. What kinds of images do you think would best supplement this article? (For some reason, this video comes to mind -- but I don't see any indication of its license. It also probably wouldn't make sense included in its entirety, even though several pieces relate strongly to the topic.) -Pete (talk) 18:18, 15 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Well, if there was a standard image that people could associate with the OEP, that would be nice. I've seen a graph illustrating the trajectory of levels of openness and a diagram on OER and OEP. With regards to the video, I suppose it could be downloaded, edited and uploaded again; if it's under the appropriate license in the first place. I'm familiar with the video and it's making me think of his other video, A Vision of Students Today although I would want to link to the comments he has made since (when I can find the link), and in a similar vein, there's one called Engage me. I'm now also thinking of a couple of RSA animate videos which may also connect with the article. Potentially worth listing links in a further reading section. - C01Clem (talk) 00:14, 16 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Prompted by another suggestion that this article needs an image or two I made a couple of searches at Wikimedia Commons. I didn't find a lot but, here are a few images that may be of use within the article. If you see a relevant place, please add them in.

OPAL members table[edit]

Thanks for the edit Pete (and introducing me to another way to place tables). The table format you have used also works a bit like an image in breaking up the text (which I like). The abbreviations in the last columns are for countries, and that's how they were originally. I think you are right, and that for clarity it would be best to find out and write the full names. - C01Clem (talk) 00:21, 16 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Reference Format :LDR#List-defined_references[edit]

I felt that having the full content of references in the body of the text was making the edit page overly hard to read (and edit). Thus to avoid clutter, I have reformatted the article as per the List Defined References (LDR) guidelines. In future please add the full content of the reference (with a ref name) to the reference list at the base of the article and the shorter <ref name="Refname" /> tag within the body of the article.

I believe this will make the editing process simpler in the future, especially if we decide to move content between or into new sections. - C01Clem (talk) 08:55, 16 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Well done, Clem -- this is a variant I haven't seen before, and certainly makes the article easier to edit! I'd like to point this out on the course discussion page (unless you get to it first)! -Pete (talk) 16:51, 16 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Pete. I was thinking that it would make sense but, thought I had better check the rules (MoS) first. I was not suprised to find it was already covered. I'll head over to the Talk page now and point it out :) - C01Clem (talk) 23:20, 16 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Definition[edit]

I think we would do well to more clearly and prominently assert that OEP has various definitions. It seems to me that the single most vital thing to say about its definition is that there is no canonical definition, and that various groups and scholars have chosen to define it in various ways. This point is of course implicit throughout the article, but I think the article would be easier to read if it were stated explicitly in the lead section, and in the "scope" section. Make sense? -Pete (talk) 16:55, 16 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. One of the challenges when starting to update this article was realising that there was no, one definition. Something in the lead like:
""Open Educational Practices" has been defined by various groups and scholars in various ways. Although, there is no canonical definition, it may be summarised as follows:"
Then within Scope add a subsection for "Definitions" and list the various definitions that then also stated within their relative Initiatives or Projects. Does this follow your line of thinking? - C01Clem (talk) 23:15, 16 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that sounds great! -Pete (talk) 23:40, 17 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Challenges[edit]

I am adding a new section on Challenges. In this section, there will be information on why OEP has not had a more widespread adoption under sub-sections: laws, & licenses; traditional learning models (teacher as conveyor of information in a formal educational institution); institutional buy-in and business models; cultivating trust & ensuring accuracy; and communication. See:

Looks like a great section to have :) You can use <ref name="Cam" /> as a short ref tag for the EFQUEL document (it's no.4 in the list at present). - C01Clem (talk) 01:58, 18 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Article Rating - WIKISOO Q2[edit]

It was thought (WIKISOO Q2 Week 6 class session) that it would be useful to discuss the rating of this article here on the talk page.

The article is currently unrated. I am thinking that we can look at the history to understand the criteria it met (and the stage it was at), before we started this period of activity. Then move forward and discuss where it is now. This should help us understand our contributions for the WIKISOO Burba badge. - C01Clem (talk) 01:32, 19 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I found this page to look at assessment grades. Looking at the old version (May 05 2013) I think we can say it was a Stub that provided "very little meaningful content; may be little more than a dictionary definition". I hardly recognise it. Having a quick look over the assessment criteria I think we should be looking at which B Class criteria we match or, could aim to reach this week. I'm not thinking about Good right now (one step at a time). - C01Clem (talk) 04:24, 19 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Four things to note. We removed issues on: Notability, Primary references, Orphan status and a suggestion it be merged with OER. - C01Clem (talk) 04:28, 19 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

A Recent Article by Paul Stacey about OEP[edit]

I just wanted to pass along an article you might consider for integration into the work on this page: "OER university practices go well beyond open enrollment" by Paul Stacey. Keep up the good work. ChristineBushMV (talk) 01:04, 20 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Christine. I note that it was originally posted on the Creative Commons blog (Pete previously linked to another) where the author is a senior project manager and I feel that care should be taken in using blogs as reference sources. (Can be unreferenced, and with lots of weasel words?). However, the graphic is under a licence that can be used here and, there are links to relevant examples of the implementation of OEP. (I am pretty sure that OERu deserves a mention here). This OEP article could probably do with more of these sources and examples as it matures. - C01Clem (talk) 01:06, 24 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Open Educational Practices from a Social Justice Perspective: Inclusion, Equity and Openness[edit]

Open educational practices should address the social justice perspective of OEP, which must include open pedagogy, inclusion & diversity in content and evaluation, digital divide and should be open to all.
