Assessment 2008-03-07: This would be a B class for a more minor figure, but Umar Tall was the "Napolean of West Africa", and a huge figure (both as symbol and in real effects on society). Topics to include are his connection with the Fula Jihad movement (a culmination or going off in another direction?), complicated relations with other muslim leaders, even jihadists, how his jihad effected French and british imperialism (some have argured that it sped up French expansion, and then made the final contol of the Niger valley possible, as Umar destroyed what was there an left a weak set of states in their place). Death...?[edit]

In the "Death and Legacy" section, it mentions that his nephew Tidiani Tall succeeded him as the Toucouleur emperor (and from the years given, this was in 1864) - however, it does not say anything about Omar's death.

Did he die in 1864? If so, what was the cause of death? Or did he retire from office in 1864 - in which case, when did he die (and of what cause)? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 198.102.219.141 (talk) 11:50, 18 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Your point is well taken. I have rewritten the beginning of that section for clarity and to include the circumstances of his death. The cause of death was apparently smoke inhalation, altough his body was never found. See Tall, Hadja (2006). "Al Hajj Umar Tall: The Biography of a Controversial Leader".
