The claim that this is the oldest Methodist Public School is a misnomer without any evidence. It is a fact that this is hearsay and lore and not based on any documentary evidence. The first school by the Methodist Missionaries was started in Galle in 1814 sometime between 14th July and 31st July by Rev. Benjamin Clough, the next in Matara in 1814 between 1st August and 4th August by Rev. Erskine, the third in Batticaloa around the 11th August by Rev. Ault, and the current Newstead is the fourth. The Jubilee Memorials of South Ceylon written by Rev. Spence Hardy in 1864 at page 210 states "The first school established in the island, by the Mission, was at Galle." Thus Newstead cannot be the first school. The Rev. Squance and the Rev. Lynch left Galle on the 14th of July 1814 to Jaffna and reached Jaffna on 11th August, 1814. The Rev. Erskine left to Matara on the 31st July, 1814 and got there on the 1st or the 2nd of August and so did the Rev. Ault to Batticaloa on the 31st July and reached Batticaloa on the 8th August. Missionary Registers published in 1815, the A History of Methodist Church in Ceylon edited by Rev. W. J. T. Small, A narrative of the establishment and progress of the missions to Ceylon and ... By William Martin Harvard, The History of the Wesleyan Methodist Missionary Society in Several Volumes by G. G. Findlay and W. W. Holdsworth and several others bears testimony to this fact and there is nothing to support the claim made by Newstead Girls School. In fact the School in Negombo was established by Rev. Benjamin Clough in 1815. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ananda Dias-Jayasinha (talkcontribs) 03:12, 7 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
