Where?[edit]

Where's the boiler? I thought it was at East River and 40th Street, but that's being demolished, right? Jim.henderson 16:21, 23 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

What?[edit]

The article is written like a brochure by ConEd.

It mentions that 30% to 50% of the heat for the steam comes from "cogenereation" and what a great thing that is, but where does the other 50% to 70% comes from? My friend was thinking of moving to an apartment across the street from the 74th street plant, but we cannot find any reference as to how the heat is generated, and even the plant's workers standing in front of the plant at lunchtimes wouldn't tell me.

Error[edit]

The info in the first paragraph regarding the northern boundaries conflicts with the caption of the first photo. One of them -- I'm not sure which -- has east and west reversed. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.73.168.93 (talk) 04:57, 8 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Look again, there is no conflict, they both same the same thing. Beyond My Ken (talk) 04:24, 17 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Technical Information Missing[edit]

The article is missing some more technical information like

  • pressures and
  • temperatures of the steam,
  • how clean is the steam (other gasses included, will it condense to drinkable water?),
  • length of the pipes as a whole,
  • mean distance from provider to consument,
  • insulation of the pipes against energy loss,
  • link to an article for the technique of cooling using steam (this is not obvious).

A suggestion to change the title of this article[edit]

Considering that New York City has two steam systems (though one is much larger than the other) I suggest the title of the article should be changed to a plural: "New York City steam systems". That would be the first step — just add an "s" to the article title as it is now.

The lead could then be changed to something brief like: "New York City steam systems include Con Edison’s Steam Operations, and the much smaller steam system that provides steam to New York University.

After the lead there could be two sections — a large section: "Con Edison’s Steam Operations", then a smaller section: "New York University’s steam operations”.

I think this suggestion is simple and not controversial, and it corrects the inaccurate impression that there is only one system. Yorickexercitus (talk) 18:31, 19 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The article has been edit to include sections for both systems. Yorickexercitus (talk) 11:33, 21 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
New York city has many steams systems in private houses, and at least three institutional systems including NYU and Columbia University. Yorickexercitus (talk) 18:26, 21 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Confusing first sentence[edit]

First sentence seems to suggest the entirety of New York’s Steam System brings service only to NYU and Columbia instead of the majority of Manhattan.207.38.170.136 (talk) 19:33, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
